Record player sound issue

I recently bought an old record player. The turntable turns and the record can be heard very softly. The amp (?sorry. Newbie..) says clairtone on it and doesn't seem to be working. If I press the reset button on the back, the sound is normal (and wonderful! So excited) but it cuts out after a few seconds.
Anyone have any ideas? Let me know if more info is needed.

A bad speaker could cause the amp to shut down. The amp and or power supply could be bad. Old gear often needs restoration since parts degrade with time.
