Recovering IRM protected data

I have a client who's dog urinated on their laptop. Worse yet they let it sit for a few days before they brought it in. The motherboard in the laptop is shot with out a doubt and they threw it in frustration destroying the screen. So economically they're replacing the laptop. In comes my problem, they want me to recover all of their documents. I have actually never come across anyone who used the Microsoft IRM Protection with Office 2003 or better. I try to take their files off the old hard drive and this protection won't let me. Curious if anyone could tell me how to get around this issue?

Guess being a hardware junkie, part of the problem is we don't know how to fix software beyond the operating system. Games of course being an exemption.
