Recently, my laptop was infected by spyware and I am thinking about
reinstall windows XP. I would like to format the entire hard drive. I
have windows XP CD, but the laptop has no floppy drive. How can I start
the laptop, and format my hard drive and reinstall windows?

Thanks,

Autogoor

Hi Autogoor... Well your laptop should be able to boot from the CD-ROM
first. So place it into the CD drive and reboot the computer. It should
run from the Windows install CD instead of the hard drive. If it
doesn't, you should be able to change this under the BIOS (CMOS) setup
when the computer first turns on. You don't have to reformat or
anything, not yet anyway. As the option should be available once the CD
loads up. Good luck!

Cheers!

The CD is normally bootable. Configure your laptop to boot from the CD
instead of the hard drive (or, more correctly, before the hard drive),
this is done in the bios setup program, and you should be on your way.

However, this process is non-trivial. You will, of course, lose
everything on your hard drive, so make backups first AND TEST THEM.
Also, the XP installation by itself may not (probably won't) install all
of the drivers for your laptop, thus leaving you with an incomplete and
prehaps not fully functional installation until you install the
necessary drivers that you will need to obtain separately (this may not
apply if the XP CD is one that came with your laptop). You will also
have to reinstall all of your software applications, one-by-one, and
restore the data files that they were using.

You must go into the Bios and select the CD drive as your boot disk. But
your question makes me think you are not sure how to enter the bios.
Depends on your machine but F1, F2 are obvious choices. If you indicate
what machine you have, someone will be able to tell you exactly what key
to press when the machine starts, Before windows starts loading.

When I don't know which key enters bios, I usually have pretty good luck by
pressing them *all* on bootup. Just run your finger back and forth,
repeatedly, along the top row after pressing Ctl-Alt-Del. If the Windows
screen comes up, it didn't work. Reboot and repeat. Usually you'll hit it
on the first or second try...it's always 'one' of them.
