Removing titles from Kindle

My husband and I share our Kindle accounts. When I've finished a book it remains on my device. I tell it to "remove from device" and all that happens is that the % read disappears. The book icon remains. If I actually "delete" it, my husband loses access too. How can I remove the image from my iPad but retain access to the book on my laptop.
