Reset Acer Laptop to factory settings, but using Monitor with HDMI

My laptop's screen has been broken for a while now so I have been using a HDMI connected to a Monitor. I got a friend to reset it but it nothing appears on the Monitor any more. I was wondering if I use a VGA cable instead? My last resort is getting my laptop screen fixed.

You can certainly try a VGA cable, but I if the HDMI is not working, I doubt that VGA will work better.
