resolution problems when converting

I have an Acer tower that I'm hooking up to my Emerson flat screen TV via VGA cable for both tower and TV,but once its on it says"resolution mismatch!change device's resolution" but I can't do it because I don't have a moniter'hence hooking my tower to my flat screen.now I don't know what to do and I don't want to change it to default I have my kids baby pics on there same with wedding photos etc...can anyone help me?

Reboot into safe mode and then set the resolution to one supported by the TV.
