Every company has its ups and downs....
Several years ago, Apple was declared dead.
Microsoft was too, several times(or it was gonna die several times).
HP...
Dell...

But every company that makes a comeback or continues to live all share the same traits: downsize(for a while), adapt, innovate, make a comeback.

RIM seems to be on step 2 at this point, unless the CEO is BS'ing of course, and is just trying to hold the prices of shares until he finishes selling off his own shares... =P

Not a death spiral, so much as a train wreck falling off a bridge. Falling quickly, possibly on fire... but very little orbital rotation.

Hmm. 2.8 billion in quarterly revenue is a pretty good sized stack of cash. About 17 years ago another company was on the 'Death Watch'. And managed to actually turn things around in grand style. You may have heard of them. Apple.

That being said, you don't turn things around by walking in circles and selling the same old slop. They need to really step up to the plate, and look at reality. Then figure out a profitable place for themselves in this reality.

Bite the bullet, and start making their enterprise services available to iOS, Android and Microsoft phones. Look real hard at whether or not they want to continue as a handset maker.

Opening up their enterprise services could be a big cash cow, since it would cover the vast majority of handsets out there. I think it may be too late for them to come up with their own handset that would actually sell in big numbers.

Actually, I was thinking it was more like

dont worry the people of my country (venezuela) are quite stupid, they will keep buying BB because its and status symbol for them (even poor people struggle or steal to get them) and they love that BB messaging probably because whatsapp its too hard to install for those who re clearly mentally challenged people (they use a BB) Rim will never go down until my country exist... i hate apple but i rather have an iphone than a BB (in a perfect world we all use android phones xD)

1) Microsoft became a stable and growing company since they started selling MS-DOS to anyone.

2) For Apple, there were people who wanted / who still bought their products. They were ALL over the place. The looked at buying another OS such as BeOS (Palm bought it), they scraped their own and eventually bought NeXT. They didn't know what they were doing so that brought in Steve Jobs, made him "Fearless Leader" in which he canceled many projects and contracts, Had them come up with different Comptuers (iMac) and fired pretty much everyone from the top. Other than a few canceled licence holders, only Apple makes Mac computers.

Anyone can make a cellphone... RIM is not special anymore.

[citation][nom]belardo[/nom]Meego is dead. RIM is next.@tobalaz: What friends that have BB and one of the companies I work for have BBs... they have all gone Android or iPhone a long time ago. None of them them miss BB. In the company, they went to iPhone when the 2nd version came out. Most are now on the 4, a few on the 3Gs.We can't really expect the CEO to start crying saying "we're in a DREATH SPIRAL ! Please buy our stuff!" now can we?I seriously think that only Android can save them. In todays world, pretty much everyone doesn't need RIM/BB/BBM.[/citation]

Seriously, the world crappiest phone iPhone 4 😀 Seriously? Maybe all companies like these days to entertain their workers by making them play Angry Birds: Yet Again New Edition 😀

There are so many flaws with this peach of crapware called iPhone, it is beyond belief that people actually buy that! I am not even going to try to list them.
The only reason that people buy it is the sheepism syndrom. 😀

"We're not in a death spiral" has turned out to be the last words of corporations before. The next time the CEO speaks publicly, the announcement will be "We're going to be a software company" and they liquidate the hardware division, then lastly they'll be bought out by Microsoft who will work quickly to integrate BBM into the new WinMo and capture those customers, but still most of them will go to Apple or Android.

To their credit, RIM is still in 3rd place for smartphones market share at 11%, but they lost 2% in 3 months. By the time they release a product, they will be nearing or less than 4th place, behind WinMo, and falling to 4th place in an OS war is the equivalent to death .

@memadmax: Apple came back from the brink 15 years ago and that only due to the intervention of Steve Jobs and Microsoft wanting some competition to make things look competitive to the DOJ. How things have changed for MSFT since that time.

@Zingam_Duo: Very troll-ish. Yes, the fastest growing platform (by greatest % gain in this report) is all sheep, a growing number of sheep. What's it like knowing this opinion isn't your own, but one you simply copied?

It seems the US-based technology media likes to claim that anything not Google or Apple is dead, and RIM is one of those affected dearly by the negative marketing. Heck, RIM isn't the first victim - Nokia has received a bad rep thanks to American media, and Symbian is now permanently scarred in the minds of many despite it being a very efficient and adaptable platform. Places like Engadget didn't even give MeeGo a chance to fly - they just kept bashing it until it finally died.

The US-based tech news sites form a disproportionate amount of opinion on the internet. Hell, look at elsewhere - BlackBerry is the number one platform in a bunch of countries, regions and cities. Canadians still love their BlackBerry. People in India flock to it for its versatility. 50% of Indonesians use a BlackBerry. I wouldn't call a company like this "dead".

The matter of fact is, the first losses in 9 years is quite a good record to go by, and if after 2 more quarters of losses the company can come back to profitability, then I'll be more than happy.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion was announced 5 months ago. It is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
