Rip DVD on PC then serve to RTV?

Is this possible? I have DVArchive on my PC for pulling stuff off my 5508
to take advantage of more storage capacity. I was wondering how I could go
about ripping a DVD to a file that can be streamed back to my 5508? It'd be
nice to put my daughter's favorites on-line for the RTV to use.

Thanks in advance...

Maybe I am making this to simple, but why not just run your DVD player
as an input into the Replay unit and record the show onto the Replay
drive thru a mannual record of the DVD while it is playing?

Not dissuade you, but...

I think it would be a lot easier, & in the end cheaper, to just go buy a $50
DVD player at say Fred Meyers, or somewhere, to watch the DVD.

Not a problem, although you'll need some time, some software and some
drive space.

Go to

http://www.g4tv.com/screensavers/features/426/Play_Your_PCs_Video_Files_o
n_ReplayTV.html

for instructions.

I've done the wife's exercise videos, as well as a few hundred downloads
from the newsgroups for shows that I've either missed, or don't have
access to.

The easiest way (least work for you) to transfer a DVD to Replay is via
the line in jacks. Simply play the DVD on a DVD player and record it's
output on the Replay.

The other method is a program called "RTVtools" to convert the DVD MEPG
you rip to Replay compatable files.

But by and far the easiest way is to plug the DVD into the replay and
let it record, Just set the manual record feature and take your daughter
to dinner

It isn't a matter of not having a DVD player, etc--it is a matter of
convenience... Having a "video server" that can serve up movies to my RTV,
especially since we're likely to get a second one for the family room, would
mean not needing to find where the DVD my 3-yearold wants to watch--just
stream it from a cheap PC running DVArchive and a big drive...

Ooo... hadn't thought about the NGs for getting shows... thanks for the
idea.

Another thing about newsgroups... If the show is already there you
could get to download it a lot faster. Especially if you nave a news
service that lets you download at your full download speed (which
could be several Mbps for broadband) rather than someone else's upload
speed.

Makes more sense than some might think. (Murphy has a rule about DVD's.
One is if you have 100 DVD's lying about the house, and you want to
watch just exactly ONE of them,,,,,, Well, you can find the other 99

What transfer speed is needed to spool via DVArchive from PC back to
the Replay unit.

I am currently using a wireless connection on the PC. The video on the
Replay when being sent from the PC is not smooth. Transfer speed from
the computer appears to be in the range 31KB/s - 45KB/s. Are there
setting that I can use to increase this or do I need to get a wired
connection established for the PC

The speed varies depending on quality, I think Standard is around
300Kbps Hook up a wire.

I'm ordering a Damon motor home (37 Foot job) I asked if they could
string a single cat-5 from front video to back video (How else am I
gonna hook-em up) they said "Can't do it"

I'll bet they do

It's approximately 300KB/s (which is equal to 2.4Mb/s). Don't confuse
bits (as in Kb/s) and bytes (as in KB/s). Network connections are
usually measured in bits per second (b/s) and computers (including
Replay) use bytes per second (B/s).

Wireless (802.11b) claims "up to" (notice those little
meaning-destroying words) 11Mb/s (that would be 1.4MB/s). Actual speed
will be much lower.

Ethernet is supposed to work with 100-meter cables. That's about 325
feet.

Wireless "b" is useless except for guide updates. You need "g" or "a"
with a good enough signal to get decent bandwidth. How fast is the pc??

And you'll still get a much better connection with a wired network.
It's a lot simpler and easier to set up too. At least consider it.

No, that's not the issue, Damon's reply was "We don't have that kind of
cable in stock so we can't install it.

What, they never visited the local Radio Shack?

And I'd be willing to bet they have a mile or so of Cat-5 lying about
the office

And maybe even an extra bundle in the back room, left over from
installation. Companies often suffer from poor internal communication.

Go to VCDQuality.com and watch for the things you want to be posted to
alt.binaries.svcd or any other group in SVCD format. Mount the disk image
downloaded with a Nero virtual drive and copy the files from the MPEG folder
to your drive. Then use TMPEG Express to combine the files to one and
convert to Replay Mpeg2. Run through RTV convert and import to DVArchive...

Or for doing your own DVD's use a DVD to SVCD converter for the giganews
