is it possible to get combo rom/prom cards in CF /SD format

i would dearly love to have full versions of excel/word/ + lots of other
real programs
to rum on my toshiba e800 w2003se pda

if i can get them on prom/rom then i ca extend the functionality of my great
pda and also give microsoft their due

i dont really like the fact that i cannot upgrade my inbuilt
software/firmware easily...

i would also like to see service packs on such as the terminal services
client and ie/media player

toshiba, once they have your money, see qute happy to let you twist in the
breeze, and not support a brilliant product...

Only programs written and compiled for your specific os and processor
will run on ppc's... "windows" programs will not function no matter what
the storage media

>> rom/eprom <<

Those terms are valid but outdated... "rom" is describes the basis of
the storage media for the ppc os and memory cards, but it is "flash rom"
which is functionally usable as storage media, the same as ram or hard
drive media, but, unlike ram, remains in place when the power is removed.

eprom refers to storage media that can be written to once but cannot be
erased or rewritten... normally used for permanent storage of items such
as permanent computer bios code that can only be changed by swapping the
physical chip for a new one.

Check out Planmaker and Textmaker - these programs may give you what you are
searching for in excel/word capabilites on the handheld. Much more powerful
than the stock lackluster ppc apps.

What stops you from installing the programs to a sd/cf card, leaving room
for your data. This way the program and data are kept together, and if you
want to do office work just stick in the corresponding card, etc. This also
allows you to tailor it to your needs.

I would like to see the need for service packs to go away and we go back to
real versioning of software, not "hack of the week"

Toshiba did have a good product. If they had chosen to exploit the host usb
capabilities of their PPC it could have been a different outcome, IMHO.

Question Beverly, isn't eprom short for erasible-
programable rom, wouldn't this make it unnecessary to
swap this type of rom? I'm not certain, and it seems
terms change - that's why I ask.

TIA

My remembering is that it was "Electrically Programmable ROM"

"eeprom" indicated "Erasable Electrically Programmable ROM" but these
were standard dip chips with a clear round window over the ebbedded
silicon chip... when the chip needed to be reprogrammed, an adhesive tab
covering the window was removed and it was placed under a strong UV
light source and afer several minutes, the light sensitive chip reverted
to it's originally unprogrammed state which could then be reprogrammed
using special hardware.

Hi,

Actually these are the real meaning.

EPROM

Acronym for erasable programmable read-only memory, and pronounced ee-prom,
EPROM is a special type of memory that retains its contents until it is
exposed to ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light clears its contents,
making it possible to reprogram the memory. To write to and erase an EPROM,
you need a special device called a PROM programmer or PROM burner.
An EPROM differs from a PROM in that a PROM can be written to only once and
cannot be erased. EPROMs are used widely in personal computers because they
enable the manufacturer to change the contents of the PROM before the
computer is actually shipped. This means that bugs can be removed and new
versions installed shortly before delivery.

EEPROM

Pronounced double-ee-prom or e-e-prom, short for electrically erasable
programmable read-only memory. EEPROM is a special type of PROM that can be
erased by exposing it to an electrical charge. Like other types of PROM,
EEPROM retains its contents even when the power is turned off. Also like
other types of ROM, EEPROM is not as fast as RAM.

EEPROM is similar to flash memory (sometimes called flash EEPROM). The
principal difference is that EEPROM requires data to be written or erased
one byte at a time whereas flash memory allows data to be written or erased
in blocks. This makes flash memory faster.
