Rule of thumb for play time.

I think the play time for 1GB is 1 hour at the lowest resolution. What
would be the play time for the highest resolution? How much time could you
record with the 40GB machine?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Bill

Actually, a little more. For most purposes, that's close enough.

For Medium (may be needed occaisionally) - about 1/2 standard.
For High (seldom if ever needed) - about 1/3 standard.

My experience is that Highest Quality takes 4x the space, or 10 hours
total on the 5504. There is no reason to ever use it. For my money,
with a decent cable/SAT TV signal, standard is WAY plenty. I have
recorded the same HBO movie in std and hi, and I cannot tell any
appreciable difference. I have then transferred both to DVD, and
still, you cannot tell a difference.

Cheers!!

I have never found a need for anything more than Standard. Supposedly,
Medium has lower compression which works better for fast action.

I think there is a visible difference between standard and medium. On
standard, I can definitely see visible artifacts. Check the edges of
objects where the color changes significantly - sometimes it will
shimmer, and look like they are behind a slightly translucent object
like a shower stall.

Of course, if you have 13" TV, then maybe you can't see. But on a 32"
Trinitron I sure can.

The difference between medium and high is much less, and I can't tell
the difference.

I have noticed some artifacts on my 65" from time to time but it isn't
enough of a problem that I would want to trade off the disk space or
the transfer and record to DVD time.

I've recorded at all 3 settings

"Standard" I can not read much in the way of text scrolled or placed on
screen, Example, if watching a news show (Something I've never recorded)
the speaker's name.

Medium... I can usually read the speaker's name

High... Is like watching live (I can usually read the speaker's name)

Medium is about as good as you will ever likely need.

in my opinion, if you are recording sports, you need to record in High or
medium. you can really tell a difference between the 3 recording sports.

I have a 73" rear projection and a 42" plasma and I can't tell the
difference between "live" and standard for the shows we watch. I can
see where it might make a difference in watching fast action sports but
not for typical prime time fare.
