Right now I watch tv on my kodibuntu system installed on an oldtimer computer (including computerscreen) and want to upgrade my home theatre experience.

It would be nice to watch kodi with everything it offers on my tv. But what kind of thing do I need to get it running? What is the difference between a barebone, nas, das, nuc, etc. To me it seems all the same thing, but why all those names?

The trouble is that I don't see wood for the trees. Anybody can help me?

A NAS is more focused on storage to be accessed across a network. A DAS is focused on storage, RAID, etc all in 1 box but it attached directly to a computer. Many people will use these devices to store their media for the theater PC, but don't run kodi or anything actually on it. Ripping your bluray collection can take a long time and lots of space, so using a NAS with 15TB of space that is backed up is nice.

That leaves a device for the actual media PC. A NUC is really just a small PC. People like them for media boxes because they are small. Not a lot of people want a big full sized tower in their living room, so a small box 6x6" or however small they are, looks better. They cost a lot more though for the parts because they are so small, so that size comes at a premium.

There are hundreds of mini android boxes out there now made just as media boxes and run from $100-$200.

It really comes down to what you want. Are you hooking up to a surround receiver? Do you want to be able to watch 4K? Do you want a small tiny box or do you mind a big tower? How much do you want to spend on this? Do you plan to store all your media on external drives?

Have you thought of using a raspberry pi? It is very easy to setup. I have one and it runs great. You can control it using your phone or get a usb remote/keyboard. The raspberry pi is $35-$45 depending on where you get it and you would need a usb wifi dongle $10-$20. You can also buy a case for it and that would be like $5-$10. That's it! All those different devices are too expensive I think. For example a NAS is at least $100 or above just for the device. Then you would need the NAS hard drives at least $50 each. As you can see it can get very expensive going with other devices. A setup of kodi on the raspberry pi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgfOgqdmMh4 If you are looking for kodi builds I like Chris b. You can install that by adding this source : http://chrisbwizard.pcriot.com/kodi/ If you have any questions let me know!
