Running laptop using external HDD

I have got Compaq C700 laptop. It supports boot from USB HDD. Accidently its internal hard disk got corrupted. Now I want to run windows XP on this laptop using an external HDD. Please guide me the steps to install windows xp on this external HDD with having an internal hard disk installed.

You can't. You need an internal drive with OS so it can load the drivers for the external drive.

Hi, if you want to use an external drive for the OS, you need to connect the external at the internal drive connector.

You can run a Linux Live distribution off a DVD or a bootable USB drive, but not Windows.
Depending on what you want to use the system for, Linux may be just as good for you.
