I put a old s.d. card in my Motorola xprt boost mobile phone. Does it need to be reformatted? Or should format the card then reformat it?

Don't have a clue just don't know if I can screw up the phone dew To s.d. card that's all. I'm not really wanting to up grade just
more memory .
