SA Tivo and Directv

I am thinking about switching to Directv from cable. I currently have 2 SA
Series 2 tivos, lovingly hacked. Will I be able to use these seamlessly with
directv, or should I get directivos. If so, which models are the best combo
of functionality and hackability? Also, would I pay the regular fee or the
directv fee for the tivo service if I used the SA units with directv.

TIA

You are able to use standalone units, but DirecTiVos are better. You've
already intuited one reason (see my answer below), and another reason is
the Dual Tuner issue.

Plus, you can sell your SA TiVos on eBay to recoup your investment (just
watch the licenses on the hacks & software you installed... some software
is not allowed to be transferred, even with the sale of your TiVo...).

Or you can keep them, and cancel your subscription, in case you go back
to cable later. You have options, unlike with a rented unit (sorry, that
sentence is a bit off-topic... just a random dig against Cable Company
DVRs...).

> If so, which models are the best combo of functionality and hackability?

That's largely a moot point. Most places where you order DirecTiVos from
don't give you a choice of models, beyond "HD or not" ;)

If you buy your units from a place where you do get to pick a model, you
should search DealDatabase for any unit you're interested in. There may be
some model-specific quirks.

However, AFAIK, all units are equally hackable now, since I believe I read
that you can even run 4.x on RID units now. OTOH, 4.x will soon be
obsoleted by 6.x... Come to think of it, if you have a choice, you may
want to buy one of the units that 6.x is confirmed for.

If you use your SA units with DirecTV, you'd pay the standard TiVo
subscription rate. That's ~$13 for the first unit, and ~$7 for the second,
unless you bought lifetime.

If you get two DTiVos, you'll pay only one "DVR" fee, I believe it's
$5/mo. You'll also pay $5/mo for the second unit, but that fee is the same
whether you have a DTiVo or a standard DirecTV receiver.

Unless you need to record non DirecTV content, my opinion is switching to
DirecTiVos is a no-brainer. Each one can record 2 things at once as well as
play/record DolbyDigital.

If you are paying monthly on your Standalone TiVos, then you would continue
paying the same rate for your TiVo functionality cause as far as DirecTV is
concerned, you just have regular receivers. Switching to DirecTiVos would
drop your TiVo service fee from $20 a month ($13 plus 7) to $5.

If you have lifetime subscriptions on your current TiVos, you can sell them
for quite a bit on eBay (over $200 each is a very conservative number).

I did both.

I already had two DirecTV receivers when I purchased my two SA units;
this was before the DirecTiVo boxes were available. [Note: Marital
bliss is his-and-hers TVs with his-and-hers TiVos.] Then I purchased
a DirecTiVo. Since it was installed with a multiswitch, which can
drive four tuners, I left the old SA + simple DirecTV receiver setups
in place.

From what I can see, the R10 is not hackable. Any opinions on HDVR2,
dsr7000, or other series 2 models? Seems like they are the same model,
different badges. Appears 4.01 can be installed, giving HMO abilities.
Correct?

http://www.delanave.com/projects/tivo/

has the instructions on RID, but that web site is down Monday morning.
Nothing permanent I hope.

Hardly, 6.2 for DirecTiVo doesnt do HMO or MRV; so one might prefer
4.01b to 6.2

Standalone pay their fees to TiVo. DirecTiVo tivo fee goes to DirecTv.

I have 240 hours now, and with Tytools to offload to my PC and thence to
DVD, I effectively have infinite storage. Dont need LBA-48
