Samsung or HTC

I am contemplating buying between a s5 or one m8. I have seen the specs and the comparisons. Htc as of late have not been doing good as a company. My question is, should I take that factor into consideration or purely just focus on the phones?

Focus on the phone itself. That's what you're buying, not some shares in a company or another. Best thing would be to go to a store and play a bit with both, see which one suits you best.

HTC's phones don't have removable batteries, and the original One didn't have an SD slot. I think that's changed in the M8.

The other ones to consider are the LG G3 when it arrives and the Note 3.
