who cares? If google spent millions of $$ on this then I'm sure they had some kind of reason...I can't imagine what it would be, but maybe that's why I don't own a multi-billion dollar search engine. They must be protecting themselves from something.

I think Google's just covering their arse. If another person or company got the patent, then they'd sue Google.

Google did this for a good reason. We just don't know what that reason is. No company spends 5.5 years scoring a patent they don't think they need.

Most likely they are patenting it to protect themselves. It would be pretty embarassing if they could do nothing to stop a fake google from popping up. I'd only contest this if google was planning on harassing its competition.

As to the simplicity of google: why would you want it any different? The page loads fast and offers linking to any of the features you will use without being too flashy or distracting. Altavista has a similar approach.. albiet with a little more of a gui.
