I have acquired a Dell Inspiron N5010 / Windows 7 in my travels that runs amazingly. The problem is sometimes the screen goes white and black. I'm pretty tech savy when it comes to computers, I've replaced a few LCDs but I don't believe this is a problem with the LCD. Here's a few things I've tested/done:

- It has a brand new Windows 7 install, I wiped the HDD - problem was before and after I did this.

- It works plugged in through HDMI to the TV.

- The "Dell" screen at startup (where I can load the BIOS to change the boot settings / safe mode ect.) is 9 times out of 10 white. After that usually when the "Windows" screen starts the display comes back.

-Sometimes when the computer is at the desktop the screen will fade to white slowly, the display can be seen for a few seconds but after that it goes bright white.

- It doesn't have an original battery but the battery is fairly new and is an extended battery meaning it's suppose to last longer.

- I have also changed the background settings off of the Aero theme; so that isn't it either.

I believe this may have something to do with the LCD connector, power supply (charger and/or battery), or the LCD itself. Before I go replacing parts I'd like to see what others think about the situation and if someone could narrow it down to one part.

Thanks :) - Chris

Hi, if the external monitor always give a good picture, then you can verify the cable for the screen, but I think the real problem is the screen itself. You can try when the screen goes white, to push around the screen to see if the picture will come back, if it does, the screen is defective.
