Screen unresponsive

I have a Dell Axim X3i with Windows Mobile. While on the road my screen
became totally unresponsive to taps. I tried turning it off and then on,
taking the battery out and reinserting it, and even resetting the PDA. But
none of these helped at all. Finally, when the PDA was running low on
battery power, it put a message on the screen saying that battery power was
low. Fortunately, when I tapped it, it responded and has since that time
kept responding. Does anybody know why it stopped responding and how I can
remedy the problem without waiting for it to run out of battery power.

Thank you for your help.

At the time it was not working, did you try a soft-reset? It seems you had
some software that halted your PocketPC and the appearance of the message
released it.

Those are cases in which a soft-reset usually solves everything.

Your problem is apparently common to Pocket PC's. I am
currently having the same problem, and neither soft-
resets or anything else is helping. The battery is fully
charged, but the screen will not respond and will not
reset. As with yours, I am running the Dell X3i. This
is the Pocket PC 2003 software, but I had the exact same
problem on the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, running
the Pocket PC Phone Edition 2002 software. So this seems
to be a perpetual bug no one has caught yet. Now, how to
get this thing to reset. At least I have a back-up on
chip.

Thanks.

Thanks David for the added data. I eagerly await the experts weighing in to
address our problem. BTW, how did you do the soft reset?

At the back of your device you have a small button, which only accessible by
inserting the stylus in it. That button will do a warm-restart at the
device, without erasing its contents. Just take care of saving your current
work before you do it.

David,

I must say that my iMate is currently my 4th Pocket PC (all from different
makers: Ipaq, Jornada, Dell Axim, iMate) and I have never had this kind of
problem, unless when some software I've installed get stuck. Then I
soft-reset and everything goes back to normal.

Thank you Helio for that help. That is the kind of a reset I dd. Is there
another more full reset (a hard reset) to try if this kind is not effective?

Using a Toshiba e800 with the same symptoms. I noticed that it happens
more often when I wear a syntetic jacket. When switching on the pda it
shows with the first screen and asks to calibrate it. After 5 tries to
calibrate the screen stopps responding.
It seems to be very sensitive for static charge.
The first time - middle of january this jear - i thought it was a
hardware defect. Send it to Tosh and they replaced MB, Screen and
graphiccontroller. The second time - just a few weeks later - I did a
soft reset. didnt help. hard reset (using the switch on the bottom)
didnt help. removed the battery. didnt helpd. left the battery outside
of the pda for minimum of 15 minutes, reinserted it and... it worked
again. I calibrated the screen once and it started as expected.
This happens now another 3 or 4 times. And every time the procedure helped.
To avoid static charge I use now a hardcase from
http://www.handit.de/index.php?fuseaction=detail&katid=309&produktid=882

good part!

Thanks Stephan. That gives me something (leave battery out at least 15
minutes) to try next time it happens. I have done a soft reset (poking the
stylus in the hole in the back). But I do not know how to do the "hard
reset (using the switch on the bottom)" as you described it below. Could
you tell me a bit more of how to do that?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Bob

...snip..
I have done a soft reset (poking the
> stylus in the hole in the back).
this hole is on the right side on a Tosh e800.

But I do not know how to do the "hard
> reset (using the switch on the bottom)" as you described it below. Could
> you tell me a bit more of how to do that?
yep. the e800 has on the bottom side - beside power/usb-connector -
2 switches. one to enable wlan. the other to switch on the whole unit.
very usefull cause when you go to holiday and forget the pda at home
without powering it all the time, the battery runs out.
I'll do a backup of all data (apps and PIM-data) onto the flashcard and
switch the unit then completly off by using the mentioned switch.
after holidays I switch it on, calibrate the screen, restore the whole
unit from flash and here we are again.

I wonder if your axim is as sensible as my tosh in case of static
electricity....

second msg.

I forgot this.
Even there is no word in the manuals about it, I got the impression that
the tosh e800 use a capacitor to reconcile the time when I remove the
battery. Thats why it takes about 15 minutes to discharge it completely
and have the unit totaly powerless.

Good explanation for why wait the 15 minutes. I do not have the two buttons
on the bottom of my Axim. Maybe there is no way to do a hard reset?
