I guess that totally depends on what you need the SDIO cameras to do.
Not from my own experience, but from having seen enough pictures
originating from those kind of cameras: for quick snapshots, MMS
messages, and moblogging it's probably ok. To replace any other type
of camera (including stand alone digital still camera's) it's probably
not.

The one point that is fairly consistent about all the CF and SDIO cameras,
is that they need good light to be even halfway acceptable. So, if it is
outdoor shots in the daytime, they are not bad. Indoor, for get about it.

I've got a Veo camera which is an identical device to the HP
Photosmart camera (but obviously abuot 70% of the price ;-)

You can pick them up from Expansys for about £70. It runs at 1280x1024
and 320x240 (~VHS quality) video. Low light performance is poor, as
there's no flash on the camera (though you can buy SDIO cameras with a
flash at very elevated prices from other suppliers.

I wrote a review on this cam for the Aximsite, to save me duplicating
my findings here it is :

That depends on what you want: if you want a photographic experience:
yes, forget about it. If you want a memory that you otherwise wouldn't
have: go for it. But don't expect any prints from it. I've sent some
cool pictures using my HP Jornada CF camera at the time to friends,
that would otherwise have gotten a written report. And it is true in
some cases that a picture (no matter how bad from a photographic POV)
says more than a thousand words.

Yes, I've wondered about this too - I thought it was just my model !

But as it's a CCD device, surely increasing the integration time by
programming the sample acquisition rate should be able to gather more
light for a shot (at the expense of movement blurring ?)

Has anybody a clue why this isn't offered as an option on most cams ?

In short: just like in mobile phones.

are they worth it?
