Hey! I'm planning on buying the Sennheiser HD558s for gaming, but I also need a mic. Since it had a detachable wire I'm considering the V-Moda BoomPro. I know the Sennheisers have a 2.5mm twist lock cable and the mic uses a 3.5mm cable that wouldn't be compatible with the headphone, so I needed to look for an adapter. Does anyone know where I can get a low profile 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female adapter that works with the Sennheiser HD558s?

Some Adapters:

*I found some adapters, but I'm not sure how well they will fit in the Sennheisers, which is my main concern.

I'd talk to Sennheiser directly about finding a pre-made adapter for this. You do have the option of buying a spare headphone cable, and splitting it into a 3.5mm adapter; however, it would not be giving you the same mic placement and it would need to be constructed to avoid flex (between the jack in the headphones and the spliced in adapter).

If it were my headset project, I'd build an adapter first. If it fails as a mic adapter, I can still use it as an adapter to use most auxiliary cables for my headphones, if I managed to lose/break the OEM 2.5mm cable. If you're not a DIY person, I'd just talk to Sennheiser about this. Maybe try a Radio Shack, or a similar electronics store?

This thread talks about removing the locking ring in the headphones. I'm planning on removing the locking ring so I could use an adapter, this way I could use the microphone at the right level. I'm asking for an adapter that will fit well and won't fall out. Sadly I don't think Sennheiser has an adapter that works with it's headphones with or without the locking ring. So if there is an adapter that fits well, I would gladly like to know.

Would these work?

I'm not particularly saying to buy a Sennheiser adapter. I'm saying to talk to them about what you're looking for, and see what they would recommend you using (if they have one to recommend). They might know of a company who makes a locking adapter (what I would personally recommend), and be able to give you a link. If it prevents you from needing to mod your headphones, might be worth a couple emails. Even if it yields nothing, you have an official answer from Sennheiser on the matter; and that's worth something.

I'm all for modding headphones, though. If you want to do the 2.5-3.5mm adapter from eBay, that is in the Head-Fi thread you posted. It won't be a permanent mod, but it could definitely turn out perfectly fine; maybe use something to shim the adapter into place snugly, to avoid it from pulling out. My only issue would be that it isn't fixed into place, but I am picky like that. If you remove the locking piece inside the headphones, you might be able to fit any of those all-metal adapters in (the eBay one will definitely fit, according to the thread).

You did kind of answer your own question with the thread you posted... but I'm just trying to give you options. I prefer OEM spec mods to cheap Chinese mods lol.

The downside to that is the headphone cable is rarely ever in the same place. Mics work best when fixed into place. You'd be better off with a lapel mic than a cable clip-on style.

In fact, that really isn't too terrible of an idea, really... if you can find a decent one to use. Use a lapel mic with a USB sound card, and viola; you have a mic that is fixed into place, and no worries about attaching it to your headset. The only downside is it's a second piece of hardware to manage. Just another thought. Thanks, shotgunz, for the idea. I might use that some day haha

The problem is that I want something of better quality. I am currently using the Zalman mic and its not as good as I would like it to be. I need something closer to my mouth to better pick up what I'm saying, like a boom mic. This is why I considered the V-Moda BoomPro or even Antlion ModMic. The V-Moda BoomPro seems better because I wouldn't need to have to hassle with another wire or put anything on my headphones like the Antlion mic. Finding a good adapter could also open up more compatibility with on the go situations.

I just wished Sennheiser made an adapter with the locking mechanism on it for compatibility with 3.5mm wires...

Send Sennheiser an email, and see if they know of one. They might have one that we haven't found, or they might know of a mic that fits. Otherwise, you have a solution. Although it can unplug itself with some rough cable handling, it's still an option.

I want exactly what you have. What components are those (not just a boom mic... what is it? Brand? Does it have a name?) What kind of adapters are you using, etc?

It's not personally my headphone set, but I do know how to make it. Brands can vary, but you can look on the ratings from amazon and pick a choice from there. You have plenty of options to choose from.

Mic (Check ratings):

Adapter (any of these will work):

Cable ties (any of these will work):

Ok my question is, how are you connecting this? I'm assuming you're using a splitter? I don't understand what having a 3.5mm extender will do?

Go back up a few posts and I click on the spoiler to show an image of the finished product. The 3.5mm extension cable is used to connect the mic to your audio port. Without it the mic would plug directly into your pc and you wouldn't be able to attach it to your headphones.
