Serious Tivo commentary

After not reading this NG for about a week, I'm amazed at all the
posts bitching about 1 problem after another.

A lot of TTG stuff but other things too.

It must be chaos to be a techie working for Tivo right now.

That's only because people don't post to say things like, "Hey I got my Tivo
and it worked just like the manual said it would." Look into any other News
group and you will find the same theme, people looking for help or
complaining about something that doesn't work properly.

I know there's a web site that keeps newsgroup statistics. I bet if you look
at the number of posters for this group over the last 3 months you would
probably see maybe between 500 and 1000 unique posters. That's a rather
small number compared to the total number of Tivo owners. Plus if you sorted
through the actual posts there are probably less than a dozen recurring
topics, TTG being the latest fad to hit the group.

I'll suspect 90% of the phone calls to Tivo tech support sound something
like this.

Customer: I got this Tivo and I can't make it do what I want it to do.
Tivo Tech: Consult page so-and-so in your owners manual for step by step
instruction on how to do what you want.
Customer: Oh, yeah...I see that...uh...thanks...bye now.

The other 10% are probably network related calls trying to get the Tivo
connected into their home network or trying to get a wireless adapter
working.

Since you seem to be the prophet of gloom and doom for Tivo do you care to
put a date on when Tivo goes down once and for all?

Cheers

Realize that Mr. Anti-Tivo will never say anything positive about Tivo
and goes out of his way to make negative comments, even if he has to
make them up. So don't even accept that the original statement is true
unless you independently believe or verify it. I don't think there's
actually been a lot of complaining about things lately in this forum any
more than normal. Complaints have been falling into a couple
categories, some valid, some not:

- Complaints about Tivo features that stem from misunderstanding or not
reading instructions (no more than normal I don't think)

- Complaints about a few relatively minor problems due to the TTG
upgrade, i.e. slower menu response, inconsistant remote control response
at times. I believe these complaints are/were legit, but that TTG
updates are addressing them (hence the multiple upgrades some have
gotten). Has anybody *had* this problem and then found it was fixed in
a subsequent upgrade?

- Complaints about speed (or lack thereof) of TTG transfers. I guess
it's a legit complaint, but I'm not sure how legit seeing it's a free
added feature that you couldn't (without hacking) do at *all* before.
That doesn't mean a bit of noise making for future improvement isn't
called for though!

He has, I believe it was sometime in 2001 ;-).

I'm on record as saying that Tivo will no longer exist in it's current
form 6 months from the time Directv starts marketing their own DVR's.

Version 7.1 brought with it a button bounce problem - hit a button once, it
registers twice. Didn't happen all the time, but happened often enough to be
annoying.

Version 7.1a reduced the frequency of the button bounce significantly, but it
isn't completely gone yet.

Thanks, Ken. I haven't seen this problem myself, but I know some like
you are plagued with it.

Well let me tell you about my TiVo experience.... I got my Direct TiVo for
free with an install deal. I pay $5 a month which is pretty much nothing
these days. My TiVo has never broken down, never needed Tech support, never
caused me any trouble. What it has done is given me the freedom to do what
I want with my time and still allowed me to watch what I want, when I want
to watch it on my TV. Even my wife thinks the TiVo is very cool indeed...
and she doesn't usually like my video related stuff all that much.

One more thing about me and my TiVo... I know that it is just TV. I don't
worry about saving programs forever. I don't loose sleep over something that
has passed by on the tube without me getting to record it, should I have
forgotten. I record what I want, watch it and delete it. I see so many
people on this NG that are just dying when they miss a TV show or it starts
late, or one of a hundred different troubles they have... It's just TV! But
I do love relaxing and watching my shows from my TiVo.... and it works very
well with no hacks or upgrades....

I don't know about *his* DirecTiVo, but my HD DirecTiVo experience mirrors
what he says about reliability and cost, and the HDTV is just fine, thank
you.

Oh really.

Where did you get that HD Tivo for free?

Maybe you should take a another look in that mirror. If you can stand
to see a dullard staring back, that is.

Ask DirecTV as a long-term, high-value customer.

So, this is why I received a second "service update" message today.
I thought it was a mistaken re-send of the message they sent a few
weeks ago about getting theTTG feature.
One thing I noticed immediately was that the menu responses were much
faster than before. Previously, it was extremely sluggish, but now it
seems to be back to normal.

Actually, my Elite is HD but I don't watch much in HD of the Direct.. and ya
know.. It doesn't make that much difference to me either.... Now I love it
when something is HD.. but don't worry about it when it is not...

Would anyone over the age of 14 have as much free time as Sean apparently
has, and the will to spend it so unproductively?

Yeah, that Sean is a pretty pathetic individual. He has nothing but
negative things to say, hides his identity and is factually incorrect more
often than not. One might guess he's also stupid, short, ugly, poorly
endowed, single and his mother dresses him funny (being that the light from
his room in her basement isn't that great)

Good point. I would like to say the following:

I got my Tivo Series 2 about a year and a half ago and it has worked
beautifully. Their site walked me through setting up the unit as part of a
computer network, without their help I never could have done this. It
worked flawlessly. I purchased the home media option and have used it
several times. It is intuitive, user-friendly and works like a charm. They
have now given me (and other home media users), free of charge, the
Tivo-to-go feature which allows me to save Tivo recordings to my computer's
hard drive. What other company gives you stuff for free just for owning
their product? I followed the simple instructions and have saved three very
old recordings to my computer, so I could finally delete them from the Tivo.
They play just fine in the computer.

Considering how often I use it (hours every day) and the quality of their
service, my Tivo would have been a bargain at three times the price.

It takes very little time + effort pointing out the obvious.

But thanks for your concern.
