Should I upgrade my laptop or hold out?

I have an elitebook 8570w

i7 3610
k1000m
24gb 1600 ddr3
500hdd

I was thinking about getting an m2000m from an ebay seller that said that he can make it compatible with my elitebook. Also getting a 500gb - 1tb ssd to complete the upgrade.

I have been thinking bechmarks may not be as real as real life scenarios and missing instruction sets, new architecture, yadda yadda. So I have thought I should hold out and just buy a laptop with these specs and expect similar or better results.

I was thinking that i could just buy a 3840qm in a few years and still be better than the 6700hq but that is in benchmark land, what about real life scenarios? Should I hod out or keep a sleeper laptop that no one will want to steal, lol

Is a desktop out of the question? Because your results will be paramount in comparison to a lap top, especially in the thermals department.

I sold my rig to have portability and I will just keep a monitor at home for stationary. Thanks

I don't care about thermals. I am in a room that is 4' x 8.' I need to walk and keep it clean because the rooming house is so enclosed with so many different people that bugs are easily attracted. I have to bomb it on a tri-monthly basis to make sure no bugs come in. I will have a bed tray or a wall mount converted for a laptop with a fan built in it. I am on my way to making the 3D movie I want. Yes, on my laptop. I know my limitations as of now and am trying to push them as far as I can go. Getting a new laptop would put me in a 6700hq and 960m piece of junk. I am not a tool to psychological marketing for VR. I do need help from my Tech buddies though. Thank you very much for your response.

My best suggestion if you can wait, then wait as you will always get better machines. If the current one does what you need well, then hold out.

I have bought the M1000M and am waiting its arrival. I have also bought cooler masters thermal paste as my experience was great with it. This is thanks to Codygriffy's input. I will buy the 3940XM to upgrade the CPU in about 6 months when my 3610QM starts to dive in programs updates. The 3940XM would be exciting as it is 11th best on Passmarks ratings for laptop CPU's. I will have more research to do before I know my 8570w can actually have the 3940XM in it, but the odds are looking in my favor and the higher TDP should be brought down to 5W higher instead of 10W because the K1000M I have now is 45W and the M1000M is 40W. Though are through different inputs of the motherboard the overall TDP with the new thermal paste should hold my computer at a very stable state. I am thinking this will have minimal effect on the overall life of all the components and am excited to put all of this research to a real life scenario. My 3D Movie pre-planning is working out in my favor so far.
