Should I use an antivirus program? Or am i wasting my time?

Hello,
All my computers run windows 10. But was wondering if i really need an antivirus program installed on my pcs? i've always installed AVAST free or AVG free but am i wasting my time should i just use the built in antivirus program and just install chrome and use a securty extension?
I'm not going to purchase an internet securty program for all my devices and pcs as it will be rather expensive!

I would at least use one of the FREE ones Avast or Avira. Also install the FREE version of Malwarebytes. This is plenty of protection.
