Any truth to the rumors that Leica will soon come out with a small
(shirt-pocket size) digital camera?

Hmmm, depends on whether they survive their current financial troubles

Until they actually introduce a product, no.

;-)

And if they do, it'll still be a Panasonic dcam with a Sony sensor despite
the higher price.

Speaking of which, is the Panasonic digital camera with the Leica lens a
recommended product? Or is the format--lens, etc--too small to make a
significant difference in image quality? (To be honest, I'll probably be
using the small camera for snapshots and "convenience" shots, and leave the
potentially enlargeable shots for my digital slr.)

Why wouldn't it use a Panasonic CCD like all the other Panasonic digicams?

I would strongly recommend the Panasonic FZ20 to someone who wants a long
zoom, image-stabilised camera, but doesn't want the penalties associated
with the DSLR. Of course, the DSLR with its bigger sensor can potentially
produce better pictures under a wider range of conditions. Certainly the
image quality from the Leica lens exceeds that from many other cameras
with similar-sized sensors, but so does the quality from the best Nikon
and Canon lenses.
