Smart TV and older home theater

Bought a Samsung Smart TV last fall but the Denon S301 (maybe 12 years old?) will not play the sound. I used an optical audio cable, The Denon has no HDMI.

Any thoughts?

Optical should work.

You may have to explicitly tell TV to "use external speaker."

oh I did and all I heard was nothing 🙁
I bought a new Sony sound bar. Plug and Play!

I gave away the Denon to a friend of mine, also with a new Smart TV. And she can't get it to work either. I'd really like to solve this for her

Try telling TV to output PCM if there is such an option between PCM/Dolby-Surround. Another similar option is, Always Downsample to Stereo.

Otherwise you will have to play around with TV settings, these are some of the culprits that differ between models. This can be quite frustrating to figure out if you haven't played around with various audio options before.

Under Preferences → Sound/Subtitles → Switch audio output based on media → Off
Menu → Sound → SRS TruSurround HD → Set to Off
Menu → Sound → 3D Audio → Set to Off
Menu → Sound → SPDIF Output → Audio Format → Set to PCM
Menu → Sound → SPDIF Output → Audio Delay → Set to 0
Menu → Sound → Speaker Settings → Auto Volume → Set to Off

You can also enter Debug mode and read what the TV is trying to output by this option "Send Debug to PMS"
