Software to detect which programs have updates available?

I am looking for a program that will scan my system and tell me which of my programs have updates available. Ideally it will be either free or low cost and will update the programs automatically once I approve the updates.

That is generally done with each program individually.

I understand that, but that requires that you run each individual program to check for upgrades. I am seeking a program that will check the version number installed against a database of the most current programs and then inform me which programs have newer versions.

A LOT of applications do that themselves, automatically.
Consider the hundreds of thousands of Windows applications. That is a LOT of work for someone.
