Hi everyone,

The lady at the front desk on Friday called me because she opened a .pdf file from a company we always get .pdf files from in the email and suddenly stuff was popping up on her screen and programs were installing left and right. I've since removed them all, but more keep installing. MalwareBytes removed 1156 threats on the last scan, but more programs keep coming. Also, something has hijacked all of the browsers to open www-searching.com as the default page (even though the default page is set to google). Attached is my HijackThis log:

Solution

I just remembered that Iobit owns "Advanced system care" which I loathe beyond proportions".

Edit: This software comes hugely recommended for browser related malware: https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

You need to install a program called hitmanpro. http://www.surfright.nl/en/downloads/
Run it, and it should remove all of the viruses. At least it has for me. And as suggested, run it safe mode to ensure that you get rid of it all.

clean up time! Got anti virus software? Hittin the scan button and wait just like that wont do you any good, You have to make sure while your anti virus is cleaning, virus wont multiply.

Here's how you properly do it:
- Go to safe mode.
- Run malware software
- Run anti virus software
- Run 5x
- Run Windows normally

you`ll be good to go

Okay, so I spent the entire day yesterday in safe mode running anti virus (MalwareBytes) and the last 2 scans came back with 0 infected threats, so I restarted the computer outside of safe mode and I didn't see any new programs installed, but all of the browsers except Chrome are hijacked to www-searching.com.

Did you run Hitmanpro like I suggested? Thats what removed a similar virus in my own browser.

I'm running the programs again this morning. I did not try HitmanPro yesterday, but I've downloaded it this morning and after I re-run MalwareBytes I'm going to follow up with HitmanPro for the "2nd opinion" they advertise it for! Crossing fingers on this one.

Okay, so I've finished running all of the programs several times, and finally they all are returning with 0 threats again twice in a row. I restart the computer outside of safe mode again, and the browsers are STILL hijacked. I stopped two processes on startup: YTdownloader and WindeskWinsearch. I I looked for the files in the location listed, including hidden files, and can't find them anywhere so I believe they have been removed by the scanners. I'm posting my current HijackThis log in case it is any help:

Have you tried re-installing the browser, and before reinstalling, run hitmanpro again? Also, did you make sure that you installed the right version? 64/32-bit depending on your OS

Messing around with Chrome settings stopped the www-searching page from popping up whenever i opened it. Reinstalling Firefox was successful, and it now has stopped displaying the page as well on startup. I've deleted the update for IE 11 and reverted back to IE 9...........still pops up on the startup. I can not figure out why, and I don't think it's actually possible to delete IE entirely and reinstall it. And yes, every uninstall was followed by a virus scan, no results still. Any thoughts?

I just remembered that Iobit owns "Advanced system care" which I loathe beyond proportions".

Edit: This software comes hugely recommended for browser related malware: https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

If that doesn't work, I don't know what will.

adwcleaner seems to have taken care of it! All 3 browsers open successfully with no hijacking. No programs, as of this moment, have been installing without permission. The only thing Hitman Pro comes up with consistently is YTdownloader, which gives two entries. I remove them, one needs to be rebooted for removal, and it shows up again. I don't know if that's something to worry about or not, but I'll continue to monitor it over the next couple of days. Thank you all!
