Sony HandyCam vid upload to Computer?

I find this question asked a number of places, but I can't find a solution that works for me. I installed the USB driver for the Handycam, plugged the camera to the computer. The Handycam screen says "USB connecting", and that is the end of it. I can find the Handycam in Devices, but can't access anything to upload. I have tried every troubleshooting step that I can find so far with no luck. Any solutions found by anybody else that has asked about this previously Thank you!

It records onto tape and SD card, but I am trying to upload from the tape right now. I just got it, and this is the first upload I have attempted.

The two options I see for capturing video from the HDR-HC5 is via the Firewire (iLink) port or using a USB video capture device and the A/V capble. You will not be able to capture the video using just a USB cable. The USB connection is for retrieving photos stored on the memory card. Are you using a laptop or desktop? If you are using a desktop computer you should be able to add a firewire card. If you are running Windows 8 (maybe even 7) you may need to download the legacy firewire driver to make it work. If you are using a laptop and you have a express card slot you should be able to get a firewire card.

The other option is to get a USB video capture device. To capture the the HD video though you will need a capture card that has input for the component video (Green (Y), Blue (PB/CB), Red (PR/CR) cable and a separate cable (usually White and Red) for the audio.

Something like the Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle should work ($185) and this would be the most expensive route. This is only one option and I will be able to narrow it down once I know more about your computer.
