I'm a PS3 user who runs Debian on it. Obviously I'm not upgrading, but this means I'm not buying any more PS3 games either. Way to go Sony...

[citation][nom]manos[/nom]Its people like you that let Sony and Apple keep up with their practices and be so thoughtless and not give a flying f**k about us the consumers. Just please, next time, buy them the condom before you bend over..[/citation]

I neither have a PS3 or any Apple hardware, so that argument is null and void straight away. They can't screw me over because I don't buy their products.

And just a quick reality check; do you honestly expect Sony to continue spending money supporting a feature that 99% of PS3 users will never use? No, of course not- it does not make any business sense to do so.

It's no big loss to the Linux community anyways. The platform was stunted to begin with because developers couldn't get at the RSX, and the PS3 makes a poor general purpose computer. If you want true open source then don't tie yourself to a proprietary platform like the PS3. At least don't be surprised when they decide it's no longer convenient for them to support open source.

[citation][nom]kami3k[/nom]What MORE do people want? Here's a reality check, idiot. The Other OS feature was something Sony promoted BEFORE THE LAUNCH OF THE CONSOLE.It is not about wanting more, it's about wanting what was PAYED for.[/citation]

Just because his point of view doesn't align with yours doesn't mean he is an idiot. If you want to just flame people then go somewhere else.

There is no reason to remove a feature listed on the box. How would you Ipod owners feel if apple removed safari from the iPod touch? yeah same thing(it would still be an iPod...right?).

This is crying over spilt milk. And Platypus, thats a bad comparison as a lot of people that have office use outlook a lot. There is only small majority of PS users that use the OtherOS feature. If people really want to have linux, go buy a netbook!! And if you really want to sell the PS3 for a 360, then your an idiot (Not to get into fanboy'ism) but your spending money to play online, so yeah. Considering what sony does give you, you should probably say "Hey thanks for a good product, sure your worried about security issues, but you give me a perfectly good HD media center for a very reasonable price".

I had one of the first gen PS3's and put Linux on it to see what it was like. It was OK, nothing to write home about. I sold the PS3 over a year ago. I have one of the slimlines now and putting Linux on it has not crossed my mind. Ubuntu on my laptop does just fine. I will let my PS3 do what it does best, play games and watch Blue Ray movies.

Waaaa, sniff sniff, wwwwaaaaaaaaaaaa. Mommy they took my option away I never was going to use, waaaaaaaaa.

I am a cell broardband linux user, and i am also working on my diploma in IT, it's a good machine and with a few tweaks within the software (i never knew the name George Hotz untill after the update was announced) about i purchased the PS3 because of the other OS feature back when you had to pay $800 in australia, i would not of paid that much for a gaming console, but because of THAT feature and it being something i could work and play with made it an easy purchase.

though who use this option you may day... The US government for for one. though they also don't use the machines for gaming.

But what what Sony has done is wrong, remove a feature that was promoted to me on why the PS3 was different from other gaming consoles, why i should buy a PS3 that was a lot more expensive than xbox 360 at the time was, even as the advertisement says, because It does EVERYTHING.

Now it does not do having, Sony keep saying "a small amount of people" thats not true, i know many people in the community who are pissed off with the decision. And the PS3 "Fanboys" don't help. but the linux users need to group together and tell sony what we think about the other os being removed.

Also what what was seen in europe with the refund from Amazon shows that Amazon still see that terms and conditions are not above the law. you can't buy a table then sony come in and take one of the legs away. and if you signed a piece of paper saying that you would have intercourse with sony it does not say that sony have the right to rape you.

Sony and other big corporations are NOT above the law. People still have basic rights and to pay for an expensive computer that is now paperweight is not on, and if people have had their trust violated let them know. if you call the Sony Playstation help line ask for a complaints address and voice your concerns.

ok, so like people are basically turning ps3 into a media personal computer, which it is intended to do right? be multimedia gaming system with non-gaming media. So by added the linux os it gets turned into like a personal computer. Just alot cheaper and with Blu-ray and a free online services with access to the internet. Hard drive. wifi i think some have dont know for sure. for around 200-400bucks.
If you really read the article it states many things. If a retail company choices to do something over the publishing or manufacturing company it would seem that that company would have to do so to. Not saying Sony is in the right but still.

But that feature of the system was someting if i remember correctly that they highlighted for the system.

I'm not sure about it being advertised to support linux except for the fact that people could do it anyways. I unlocked my iphone and essentially gave up my warranty. There is always a give or take, you cannot expect a nonstandard feature to be supported forever. My iphone is now bricked with the new firmware/baseband but I move on. I look on my PS3 box (I have the 20gb version when it was first released) but I don't see really anywhere on the box that states "PS3 supports installation of Linux" or anything of that nature anywhere.

Probably a huge percentage on this tech site would have never installed linux on our PS3 so stop making it look like all PS3 owners were all betrayed by Sony.

I'm kinda surprised sony did this. I mean removing the feature doesn't seem to have any real benefit. I'd like to know Sony's reason for removing the feature.

[citation][nom]brendano257[/nom]Unfortunately, a company can get itself out of almost anything with "the fine print." It's sad really.[/citation]
Well, a lot of companies THINK that, but in many cases, they actually can't. In the case of a product that is sold for a flat price in a store, the EULA actually holds no legal weight, at least in the United States; this has been the Supreme Court-upheld standard for over 100 years, regardless of whether the item is protected under patent or copyright. EULAs can only dictate things that are very clearly services; i.e, those that have subscription fees, or are simply free.

Since the PS3 is very obviously NOT licensed, but in fact sold, Sony cannot dictate any terms for its "ownership" or use. Nor can anyone dictate any terms of use for any sold games; in these cases, any "protection" that the products would have can only come exclusively through copyright, patent, and other IP law; the maker/seller cannot tack anything else onto it. They can, however, dictate terms of use for the PSN; given that it is neither a tangible product, and it most certainly isn't "sold" with a one-time fee, it is very recognizable as a service, not a product.

All told, there *IS* potential for Sony to get in hot water over this; they're skirting the boundaries of what they're legally allowed to do.

ask me i think this has every thing to do with the fact that sony viao comp sales are slumping 😛 hoenslty though .. why would i buy a sony branded comp when i can build my own 😛

[citation][nom]johnh2005[/nom]Does anyone know WHY Sony did this? If there was a reason of people hacking games or hacking PSN or cheating or otherwise ruining other people's gaming experience or stealing AND this was the only way to stop them then no big deal. If it is costing Sony a ton of money to keep supporting this feature (not sure how it could but some one mentioned it earlier) then they have to worry about thier cost/return on it. Otherwise, just simply waking up one day saying "Oh lets turn off Linux in the PS3" should get them one royal Class Action Lawsuit. But then again after that they would just start charging $50 a year to play online. To the author of the original Article, I own just about all of the gaming systems out there and I would NEVER (as things stand right now) sell my PS3 for an XBOX 360. But that is just me. Free online play, Blu-Ray player, free wifi included, comes with a HDD... Bluetooth, etc etc, or Buy an XBOX and be able to play games... buy online, buy a hdd, buy wifi adapter, buy a no longer supported HD-DVD player, etc etc[/citation]

1. xboxes online is worth the money much better service , more stable , less lag, and i don't have to register a new account with nearly every game that plays online

2. ok you got me on this one , i still wonder why MS didnt put teh HDD inside the deck the original 360 had it's HDD interal

3. wi-fi is no biggy , besides every one i know with wi-fi rather it is on their 360 or their PC , have conninual discconnection problems with it , so no loss here , i'm jsut fine running a eithernet cable to my machine

4. i don't care for blue ray , i don't even have an HDTV yet , even if i do get one in the year , i don't intend to pay 30-40 bucks a movie for a blu ray disk

point is you don';t have to talk total trash on teh competeing product because for every plus/minus you point out , there is always some one like me that can refut such function's value for their personal taste.

any way for the record i'm no fanboy , truth be told my 360 doesnt get nearly the ammount of work out as my budget gaming pc does , (which i do my school work , from {3ds max} and play games from).

mainly got the 360 to play halo 3 and dead rising (1 and 2 when 2 comes out) as well as other game titles that don';t get pc ports and or have terrible pc ports such as GTA 4

the 360 was cheaper than the PS3 when i got it end of story 😛

Here has been my experience with Sony and The PS3 (I won't even state other Sony dealings here just the PS3 stuff) I bought back in early 2009 a PS3 from ebay it had everything needed besides the hard drive cage. Well I put it off for awhile after getting it because it would work just by propping up the hard drive with a folded piece of paper to make it level and fit inside the console and make a firm connection with the sata connectors inside the system. Well months later I figure screw it and I'll call sony to get this thing whole again. The first time I called sony I was told to go to a local electronics store and they'd have the part. I never went to check it out as I thought it was total horse shit. A week or two later I called back, but with my friend on the line with me (he was just playing xbox 360 while on the other line and he'd chime in when they'd put me on hold) as he is a distribution manager at a clothing company and deals with business shit all the time. Well the first person I talked to on the second call here told me the usual stuff of I don't see any option of helping you with replacing your hand drive cage. So I asked to speak to her supervisor and after a minute guy this goon. This guy (I don't remember his name) ran through a few things asking me what model of the system I had and so on and asked me where I got it from. I said ebay and he asked me "why didn't you buy it from a store?" I said "because at the time a model like this was $400 dollars and I didn't want to pay $400 when I could get a good used one for half the damn price." His answer was "Go buy a new one." I told him "what fucking sense for me to buy a new console when I have a perfectly good one here that only needs one part and the part that I need really is just a cheap piece of performed sheet metal?" I followed up with "You are working for a multibillion dollar company and you want me a person that makes under 40k a year to buy a new system for $400 when all I need is a part that costs to make probably five fucking cents? Really?" I told him to get his fucking supervisor (as I saw on a few forums you can get these hard drive cages free of charge, but sony fucks with you). 15 minutes later I'm not joking about the wait I get a new guy and he just asks me what my model number is again to confirm he has the right hard drive cage. He tells me that they have shut down their supplemental parts department and its something they don't do much anymore. Now why would a multibillion dollar company shut down there supplement parts division down? To make you buy a new system or just save a few cents here and there not sure, but its fucking cheap to do so. Maybe its because they new about the switch to the slim ones and I haven't looked at the slims myself, but maybe they have a dock for the hard drives and don't need a change for each model anymore, but that still doesn't excuse not having parts for the systems you ALREADY FUCKING SOLD! You FLAMING BAGS OF SHIT! Support the shit you already conned people into paying money for. Sadly this kind of stupid shit is the norm now with so many companies getting cheaper and cheaper on their customers for the sake of a quick profit... in the long term it bites back you ignorant fucks!

I'm glad I didn't buy a PS3 (the thought crossed my mind). Who knows what shit they'll pull in the future. I'll never buy an SCE product in the future.

On one hand I can understand them removing it because of piracy and how much of a mess it would turn their closed Playstation platform into.

On the other, they are removing a feature many people bought it for.

They created a jam for themselves, and will probably have to change their advertising slogan now as well lol.
