Why does my TV shut off and the stand by light flashes 34 times every 8 minutes

Because it is saying there is an error.
With a back projection tv often it relates the fact that the color wheel used is stuck, needs cleaning or has simply broke.
You should find the model number and make of the TV you have and if you do a bit of a Google.
Find out what the error means. Most of the time though its the projector in the tv there are three types used.
