So I just bought a Sony Strdn-1080 receiver. I am using the ARC hdmi input on my tv from the output channel on my receiver. I would like to be able to watch/see my Xbox one some of the time with audio from one of my other sources like phono or airplay, when I switch inputs I can no longer see my Xbox.
My question is if I buy a powered hdmi splitter, can I plug the hdmi output from the Xbox, into the splitter, and then send one hdmi cable into the receiver game channel and the other into a spare input on the tv? If I do that in theory can I switch my receiver to phono, then power on the tv and Xbox and play records while playing Xbox?
Thanks.

You could try to connect the Xbox drectly to the TV with HDMI. When you want the Xbox sound select the ARC. When you don't select phono
It should work but you might have to turn CEC off in the TV menu.
Going the way you suggest you might have a problem with a simple active splitter; the audio might default to stereo because the Xbox is seeing the TV as the endpoint. You would need an HDMI matrix input selector with a 5,1/2.0 switch instead of the splitter.

to send 5.1 to the receiver and 2.0 to the TV.
