[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]So what Benson is saying is that only a trained expert can spot the differance.But.They are dropping the res anyway because the hardware can't cut it?[/citation]

He's saying most people and experts can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p... however what you are supposed to read into this is that you are more likely to notice the drop in framerate required to keep up 1080p in 3D... making it a no brainer to drop the image down to 720 to keep the framerate.

Sony announced this purely to cover their butt. God forbid a 360 fanboy finds out that the ps3 runs a formerly 1080 game down to 720. I can only imagine the doodiestorm in gaming forums. It'd deffinately hurt ps3 sales. And let's be honest, though ps3 and the 360 claim 60fps all the time, they get less. I've seen stuttering and such in far too many games on my ps3 to believe it. And its not the hdd causing it.

lol of course they wont be able to do 1080p 3D on the PS3. Some games (i dare say most) cant even run in 1080p on it as is, let alone rendering 2x the frames/perspectives.

720p with no AA is def very easily distinguishable from 1080p, unless its a 720p or lower display of course. On my 60" even my 4 year old nephew or 70+ year old grandpa could tell the diff.

Dude, if I could have, I would have given you 100 thumbs up for that remark.

[citation][nom]Silmarunya[/nom]Yup, consoles are really on par with PC's as their fanboys keep telling us. Or not...This proves yet again that even a mid end PC can easily outperform any console on the market, not to mention it has the ability to do more than gaming and playing films.[/citation]

no one denies that, and you'll be pretty stupid to think that seing that this console generation is already like 5 years old...i play on consoles for the convenience plain and simple...i poured thousand in my pc back when i was a student...now i'm happy paying 300 and not having to worry about anything (compatibility, upgrading...no sence having a pc and playing in low res)...the pc is a htpc now and somethimes my gurl will grab a remote and play with me....lets see a not tech savy girl play on the pc (let alone install it)

So stop ranting and comparing pc's to consoles it makes no sence...and steam constant updating is a pain.. to have to wait to play My Game that I bought

Look, my perfectly-good HDTV doesn't do 720p so I already have to research every PS3 software purchase to be sure it does 1080i. I realize that 720p came along to save the Industry from the embarassment that comes from not being able to push 1080 through cables, but all claims that it's 'better' are lies. Finding out the PS3 is a piece of crap compared to the 360, which turns everything into perfctly good-looking 1080i no matter what sure surprised me. PS3 Fanboys can claim better featuires galore, but if it was BETTER then I wouldn't have to HUNT for 1808i games.

So now it's 720p-only for 3D games? Great. Maybe 10 more years before my HDTV dies, so I'll see you then. Maybe...

It's different though.. It's about convenience.. I find it a pain in the a$$ to install a game to play.. whilst on the PS3 I can look up old games ..drop the disc in and im set to go...

plus I get to game/watch movies on my big screen HDTV... not the case with PC...

agreed, but not everyone wants to build one and set it up with an OS, software etc. plus most casual gamers buy consoles to play games and use PC's to do everything else since it costs $120-$200 for a gamer level video card and 200$ for an xbox.

i've been out of the PC game for some time but am in the process of building a gaming HTPC and i forgot how much research is required to gather quality parts. average bros don't want to work to game, they just want to open a box pop in a disc and power up the controller. PC gaming will always be superior on a perfomance basis, but i've yet to experience modern PC gaming so i'll hold my tongue as for the user experience. the whole keyboard being superior thing is crap, for SCII, Diablo 3, etc. keyboard rules, but for FPS, sports, and racing games a controller is required.

[citation][nom]mrmotion[/nom]Do you all have to make the same pc/console argument every time they do an article on a console? Love my PCs and Love my consoles. Game on both. Have a great time playing both.[/citation]

agreed, most console gamers will never game on pc's and most pc gamers won't game on consoles. i'm building a pc to run diablo 3 and starcraft 2 it seems i haven't had a reason to build a PC since the haydays of quake 3, unreal tournament, warcraft 3, and diablo 2.

Stupid article... Most games on 360 and PS3 are not even 720p let alone 1080p. Most claim to be 720p but are really 6XX or lower. Sony is not downscaling the resolution of games since almost all games are already at this level on consoles. Except for WII that is last gen technology at 480p or less.

[citation][nom]welshmousepk[/nom]any PC gamer in the world could tell the difference between 720 and 1080 res. its the most glaringly obvious change you could possibly make to an image. what a stupid thing for this 'professional' to say.considering there are hardly any 1080p games out though, i don't see why this needed an announcement. we already know that 3d uses additional resources, and games need to drop down one resolution to support it. (1080p games go down to 720, and 720 to 480)so was this just in case someone makes a game at 2560 resolution? and we are all disappointed we cant use it in 3d? i understand the console gaming market is a 'simple' one, but im pretty sure this is a new level of dumb.[/citation]

Staring at a 42" HDTV from a couch 8' away, even with prescription lenses for optimal vision, the difference between 720 and 1080 is splitting hairs. Monitors are of course a different story as you're always a fraction of that distance away, like every pixel is under a microscope. This is also why console games can get away with such low level AA useage whereas on monitors aliasing is much more noticeable.

[citation][nom]Marco925[/nom]I thought this console was supposed to last for years and years and years according to sony?[/citation]
[citation][nom]simple11[/nom]Man I never thought to ever compare a console to a PC. Obviously with the advancement of technology, a PC will be superior (Why do yo u think I have one?) but you should never compare a PC vs a console. It's like comparing laptops to Nintendo DS or a PSP. Consoles are compared to consoles, because thats the competition. Anyhow, there are greats games that play at 1080p (FF13, Uncharted 2). People these days need to stop trolling forums so much makes them look retarded. Oh and btw, up'ing people that troll and downing people that post valid posts is quite absurd.[/citation]

The console is lasting years and years, through firmware updates. Obviously it won't sprout visuals that top Crysis with 5 year old hardware, but it's doing a lot better at this point than a PC would with similar specs.

I've never understood the point of console bashing either. They are a very practical means of entertainment that may not be "cutting edge", but you can't beat the cost/benefit ratio when you consider a 10 year life cycle. Of course PC's will be more advanced but you have to upgrade for that. Nothing really impressive about that. I like seeing what developers can do with "outdated" console hardware, and the results are often more impressive because of this. Any time I see a PC game more impressive than a recent exclusive PS3 title I end up wondering how much of an upgrade I'd need. Meh.

btw, Uncharted 2 is native 720p.

My point is, I already went through upgrading hell trying to make Crysis look as good as it can (and still not quite there), and gradually learned that most incremental upgrades are, for me personally, a waste of time and money. There is a reason each generation of consoles are around for at least 5 years and that is because it's the happy medium timespan for most people.

It is cool being able to upgrade whenever you want on PC, but now I take a more practical approach to that benefit lol.

"Benson went on to assure his audience that most gamers probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, as trained computer graphics artists barely could."

Yeah with a 23" monitor, NOT a 42" TV, RETARD!

[citation][nom]Arglebargle[/nom]If I want 3D, I'll go outside and yell at the kids to get off my lawn.[/citation]
perfect comment, does the job +1 XD

Play3's RSX is only a DirectX 9 class GPU. However, this console should be able to offload some of the graphics processing to the Cell CPU witch has a lot of horsepower. Of course that depends on the Sony's SDK to support this kind of processing. I think this is why Sony believes that the PS 3 should last a lot more than the X360. But only time will tell. I think that if MS releases a new Xbox, Sony will be forced to release the PS 4, so this statement could never be true. Stay tuned!!!
