SONY Vaio Core i7- 12 GB of RAM (SVS1512DCXB) Low Performance

Hello,

I have a SONY VAIO SVS1512DCXB Laptop with the specs as follow:

• 
  2.2GHz Intel Core i7-3632QM Quad-Core
  12GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
  750GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
  nVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE Graphics (2GB)

But, it runs slow in most of the applications. Like, in Excel, I cannot handle large data (by large I don't mean a huge database, just like when you try to plot several diagrams in same graph, which I have seen core i5 macbooks can easily handle), or in photoshop or other graphical softwares like 3ds max the performance is really slow (really lower than what is expected from a core i7 and 12 GB of RAM)....even in the windows (10) environment I sometimes feel the low performance, and usually after first startup I should wait some minutes to be able to work with the laptop otherwise it just does not respond.

Does any one has any suggestion what the problem could be from or how I can fix it?

I have this laptop almost for 2 years and these problems were kind of existing from the beginning...but during the first year I had a PC so I was not using it for most of the stuff and I didn't notice it much...

Do they run better when the charger is plugged in?
many laptops, to extend batter life, run at very reduced setting when on battery.
