Cheers for all ya help pal i have managed to find out what it was. It wasnt the laptop freezing after all, it was the touch pad and keyboard drivers were not compatable with the new version of windows i had installed and were stopping working making me think the computer had crashed. I updated the drivers earlier and everything seems to be all good.

Thanks agen

Try running the laptop in "Safe Mode" and see if you still get the freezing. If you don't, then there is probably something that is running in the background (that isn't required by the computer) that is causing your freezing, as it is using up your resources, if not worse.

How to enter "Safe Mode" when booting the computer.

In Windows 8 and 10...

As your computer restarts, press F8 (possibly a few times) to enter "Safe Mode"

a. Press the "F4" key to Enable "Safe Mode".
(The computer will then start in "Safe Mode" with a minimal set of drivers and services.)

b. Press the "F5" key to Enable "Safe Mode" with Networking.
( Once "Safe Mode" with Networking starts, Windows is in Safe Mode, with additional network and services for accessing the Internet and other computers on your network.)

c. Press the "F6" key to Enable "Safe Mode" with Command Prompt.
(In "Safe Mode" with "Command Prompt" starts Windows in Safe Mode, with a Command Prompt window instead of the Windows interface. This option is mostly only used by IT professionals.)

Now sign in to the computer with your account name and password. (If you have one set.) When you are finished troubleshooting, you can exit "Safe Mode" restarting your computer.

In Windows 7/Vista/XP...

1. Immediately after turning on the computer, or restarting it (usually after you hear your computer beep), tap the F8 key, repeatedly, in 1 second intervals.

2. The computer will then display hardware information and run a memory test.

3. Next the "Advanced Boot Options" menu will appear.

4. In the "Advanced Boot Options" menu use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" and press ENTER.

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried starting my vaio in safe mode but i am still getting the same issue. Could you suggest anything else that could be causing this issue?

Many thanks

Mother board issue was my worst fear, hense the reason I was abit reluctant to replace the hard drive costing £100 rather than jst scrapping the laptop and buying new. Is there a way of checking the ram to see if its damaged or not working to full capacity?

Well, it doesn't have to be damaged, it could be that it just isn't enough for your system anymore.

To check the memory... go to Start and then in the search box type "mdsched.exe". Without the quotes. :)

You will get a new window asking you if you want to restart and check the memory now, or do it the next time you reboot. I would choose the do it now option.

When it restarts you will see the progress of the check and number of passes it will run on the memory. Be sure you watch the memory diagnostic tool for any errors. If there are no errors, then it 'probably' isn't the RAM causing any issues.

I have just ran this and its came back with no errors. What would be the action you would recomend I take now?

Your advice is much appriciated

Is everything on the system up to date? I would check for any updates.

Other ways to test the memory, should you wish to try something else, you can try "Memtest86" or "DocMemory".

Also, you may want to run some other tests of the system, to see if there is anything that comes up. Some are....

"Hot CPU Tester" (free trial), "Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool" (free), "PC-doctor" (not cheap), "Ultra-X" (this is one is more for technicians and not cheap).

Stress Test: "AIDA64 Extreme" - http://www.aida64.com/downloads

GPU: "3DMark11" - http://www.3dmark.com/3dmark11/download/

General: "PCMark Vantage" - http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/pcmarkvantage/download/

"PassMark PerformanceTest" - http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm

HDD: "ATTO" - http://www.attotech.com/products/product.php?sku=Disk_Benchmark

Great I shall give some of those a run and see if it shows up anything. Gotta feeling it could be the cpu over heating or damage to thr mother board. My updates are all upto date and all my drivers are also. I was running windows 8 when the problem started to occur but when I had the new hard drive installed i also upgraded to windows 10 thinking this may also solve the issue but no so luck

If you want to check temps, try something like "Speedfan", " HWiNF", "Argus Monitor", "AIDA64 Extreme Edition" , "Real Temp", or "Core Temp". Me I like "Speedfan" and you can get it free, but it doesn't always work on all computers.
