Sony Vaio Freezing?

So here is my problem, I've had my Sony Vai VGN-FW55MF since 2010. I've used it for everything from gaming to browsing internet, no problems. Until about last year I would say - I started getting Blue Screen Of Death from video games, it would happen from any game even online based ones and it could be 10 minutes in to 10 hours in from happening. I've posted on this forum and everyone said it was from overheating. I bought compressed air and sprayed all the vents from dust. I reinstalled Windows and everything was great. I would get random freezes that would occur once or twice a day, basically the laptop would just freeze, the keyboard lights would turn off, and if there was any sound it would be lagging. Only way to solve it was to restart it manually. I didn't mind because this happened randomly once in awhile. Few days ago I had to reinstall windows because whenever I would start my laptop up it would show VAIO but then after that nothing. Now that I have new Windows, the computer is faster but the freezing is 10000x worse! It can happen from 30 seconds of turning computer on to 3 hours.

The things I've tried

- Registry Cleaners
- Virus Scanners
- Driver Genius Pro
- Deleting useless things from all hard drives

The computer does not feel hot when the freezes happen and I cannot hear the fan rumble or act up either when they happen.

Sorry you're having trouble. I think we can lean towards a hardware issue at the moment, unless something happened with bios (and I think we should only resort to changing the bios after we've done a few basic things first). Here's what I would do (in order):

- Look at your windows event log around the times this has happened (should be able to search for past events going back pretty far) and see if there are any error messages. Let us know what you find.

- Run memtest86 to test your ram. You can download it here: http://memtest86.com/ You will need to burn it to a cd or format a bootable usb in order to use it. This test will let us know if any of your ram is faulty, which is a fairly common occurrence in machines as they age.

- Run prime95, found here http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/prime95.html (choose based on 32 or 64 based system) after you've begun openhardwaremonitor found here http://openhardwaremonitor.org/ and are looking at the CPU and motherboard temperatures (unlike other hardware/temp monitors this one is free and there is no bloatware, just the monitoring you want). Let us know what the idle temps are for the cpu cores and motherboard and then what the max temps are while running the prime 95 stress test that will run your cpu up to max. Let us know if you experience freezing or crashes as well, as this is also used to test system stability (should be stable unless you have overclocked or something is going wrong). Also, note the 3 volt, 5 volt, 12 volt readings, as this could indicate vrm or psu failure.

Let us know what you find! Good luck.

Hey Propranolulz! Thanks for some insight! So far I did the Prime95 test and monitored the temps. During the test literally everything was nearly at Max. temp, I passed every test though with Prime95. Here are the logs from the Temp

Hey Propranolulz! Thanks for some insight! So far I did the Prime95 test and monitored the temps. During the test literally everything was nearly at Max. temp, I passed every test though with Prime95. Here are the logs from the Temp

This is at normal temperature, which is 30 minutes of starting up.

I've noticed that my BIOS isn't up to date? It says BIOS Verison/Date: American Megatrends INC R4060Y0 8/24/2009

I read in another forum with someone having problems was told to update their BIOS? How do I do that?

Your CPU was on full load, yes. That's pretty much what prime95 tests. The temperatures of 75 and 76 seem acceptable, if a little higher than you'd like to see (Tmax) for the Intel Core 2 Duo P8700. I guess the 50 for "idle" is probably okay since the processors were actually running at 1.5 Ghz at that time.

How long had you been running prime 95 when you took the data you posted? The program will continue indefinitely by itself so you can't "finish" it per se. Also, I'm not familiar with the format you're using to post data, but could you find a temperature reading for the motherboard? What did that get up to?

Anyways, I feel like, if you ran prime 95 for a good hour or two, unless your motherboard temperature is high (couldn't find it) I would move onto the memtest. Also, try to find that event log and see what, if anything, it's been throwing up around the time of the freezes. That can be very helpful and sometimes give you a pretty straightforward answer.

Yes, your bios is old and probably hasn't ever been updated, but I would save that for last. Especially with a laptop, I wouldn't know what to do with a failed flash. IMHO it's something I would save for last and then maybe have someone you know who's more familiar with the process do it with you. The computer can become unusable if it done incompletely or incorrectly.

I'll be sure to do the Memtest this weekend because I do not have a working CD-DVD drive so I have to use an external one. These are the last errors I've got on my computer before the forced boot.

Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected

I've done some researching on this, and I suspect there is a RAM issue. I feel pretty confident that the next step you need to take is to run memtest and see what you get from that. If you cannot run memtest atm, you can try searching for and running the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, it should already be on your computer.

It is not the best way to check, but if you're not doing anything, why not give it a whirl? When it restarts your computer and takes you to a blue screen where it shows the progress of the test, navigate the menu on the bottom of the screen to find the "extended" option. Take this. Let it run (will take a while) and it should show you if any errors occur while the test is running and reboot you to windows where it gives you a more detailed results.

I suspect you probably have either some bad RAM or, for whatever reason, your ram is not getting the correct voltage that it needs. We can try and play around with the voltage for the RAM in bios (raising and lowering a little) and see if that fixes the problem. It looks like it does for some users, but if the RAM itself is bad you may need to get it replaced.

Anyways. Run the windows memory test, see what it says, if it gives nothing run the memtest86, either way, post back with your results. I think we're onto something...

I want to thank you first Propranolulz for helping me, I truly appreciate it and I actually live overseas so taking my laptop to a computer store isn't that simple if I didn't know the exact problem with it. If it is a Ram problem will I have to replace the Ram? I did run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and the test came back clean, no problems indicated when I ran it. Still didn't get my hands on the Portable USB CD-DVD Drive so once I do I'll test Memtest right away.
