It's a complete lie. Movie industry profits break new records every year.

http://arstechnica.com/media/news/2009/01/what-piracy-movie-biz-sees-record-box-office-in-2008.ars

If there are 20% less films this year, it has nothing to do with piracy or profits. Probably has to do with a severe lack of talent, skill and motivation plus terrible management. I really wanted to see Moon this year, and the damn thing was only in theaters 1 week. Next lets look some of the killer movies out right now. Saw 6... WTF? Astro Boy... ohhhh Amelia.... really? At this point I'd rather pay 7$ to watch whatever program is on the Discovery channel at the moment @ the theater than to watch any crap movies currently showing.

Yep. Hit the nail on the head with that one. You are a little whiner. Could probably throw in a little sanctimonious and narcissistic and still be right on track.

Dude, get over yourself. Nobody cares about your OPINION.
Just like nobody cares about mine. Piracy will always happen even when you are dead and gone and there is not a single thing a pompous asshole such as yourself can do to change it.

You and the rest of the world need to "get over it." Life is too short. Find something important in life to place your effort into. Everyone has their opinion and lifestyle and makes their own choices. Your words (as well as mine) will not ever change the world. The best you can do for yourself is called acceptance.

I understand the concept of business and meeting or exceeding the bottom line....Now in todays age, we are seeing large HDTV's in almost every home (mine is a 61" samsung) as well as home theater systems (samsung 750w 7.1). My family and I drive up to the local Red Box, rent a movie for a buck, pop some popcorn $2 for a box of 6 bags, and dig in to a great home theater that cost under 1700 and is as good and at times better than my local theater where a movie night goes for 50 bucks easy. That's where the money is going.

Rising profits with less theater seats sold.
It's the theater's that're getting shafted more than the studios, they just can't complain as loudly.

They probably do have trouble getting talent. If you were paid $20 million to do your job last month, and knew you could do it again anytime, would you really bother working this month?

They churned out lots of movies, and many that didn't suck, when actors/directors/producers worked at the studio every day like a regular job and were paid some form of scale.

Sony blames pirated movies but the fact is its TV shows that killing them. TV shows, due to lower cost of special effects, have put movies into a tough sale. Digital TV is booming and looks great and in about 6 months I can watch the shows in the luxury and comfort of my own house.

The theater is dieing and I guess Sony is to dumb to see the writing on the wall. Why on earth would anyone waste time standing in line or being pissed by the guy in the back talking on his cell phone.

For all the guys counting the cost of movies please include $20 for transportation.

Hey A*hole, so sorry to hear about your problems. Maybe you could stop paying these actors $20,000,000 a picture and the average family wouldn't have to pay $100.00 just to see a movie. Then maybe we could afford it instead of pirating movies.
ohh and very very sorry to hear Sony ONLY made $89,600,000,000.... yep that's with a B.... billion...

After that article....By God I'm going to start pirating any movie I can get my hands on, just because it's an insult to an infants intelligence. I don't know about the rest of you, but every time I see a fricking FBI warning or those massively irritating, weird music squealing skits before the movie warning about it being illegal to copy the movie...I get so pissed off it makes me want to make 10 copies for every single solitary second I have to sit though the BS. Then again, when the movie turns out to be a lame, half-a$$ed waste of time and energy, which is 90% of the time, I consider a career in piracy.

How about this....Make movies worth going to the theater to see! STOP paying these two bit, worthless, low-lifes umpteen millions of dollars for a service that used to be adequately compensated for with a cot to sleep on and a meal. Actors are a dime a dozen. Make sure their pay reflects that.

Good God people!!!! We are talking about a bunch of dinks that make their living pretending to be someone or something they are not! You know....make believe?...something we all did as children? It ain't that bloody hard. Were it not for acting, most of them would appropriately be found at your local fast food restaurant asking: "Would you like fries with that?"

Instead what the hell have you done? You admire and faun over them, throw our hard earned money at their feet and piss your panties because these delusional, wanna-be Gods takes a second out of their busy shopping schedule to look your way and smile at their pathetic, mindless worshipers. I think I'm going to be sick!

Yet, they say that these entertainment industries are hurting? Oh...pllleeeeeaaaaasssseeee!!!! The day they stop flying around in their private jets and being able to buy that third mansion on such-n-such island in the tropics I just might give a crap! Until then, point me to where I can pick up some of this pirated garbage...I just decided I'm through going to the movies or paying for their DVDs. Perhaps if everyone would do this for just one year, it might just make them realize we are tired of them crapping on a plate and trying to convince us it is pate'.

That sure sounds good in theory...to pay all employees more, but realistically it is not. Like it or not, corporations "employ people". Increase their cost and it will be reflected in your costs. Restrict their ability to increase their costs to make up the difference and you find them writing pink slips because they can't afford Joe Smoe to sweep the floors anymore. Instead Jill or Billy Smuck will have that task incorporated into their daily routine. Keep pushing corporations out and discover just how quickly you will have to learn Chinese...if we're lucky.

Please...please....PLEASE PEOPLE!!!!! Get a clue!!! You whine and complain about how much corporations make when they give back far more than these liberal jackasses in the entertainment field.(Sony is not in this field mind you.) I'm talking about actors, producers, professional sports etc. These people do nothing to give back to the world. Whereas corporations employ YOU! YOU have the ability to work hard and move up in the world...or start your own business and listen to employees cry and whine about how they aren't paid enough for their services. However, come quitting time off they go 5:00 sharp back home to bitch and complain some more. Meanwhile, there you are, the owner, working past 8:00pm desperately trying to get things ready for tomorrow while trying to figure out how to keep your company afloat with all the anti-corporation BS rules and regulations you have to wade through and hoops you have to jump through just to keep your fricking doors open so those very same employees who would spit in your coffee if given the chance can walk in late again the next morning so you can listen to him/her bitch some more about how awful you are for not giving them every dime you might be able to keep that year after the IRS get finished raping you yet again. Does it matter one whit that while they were out drinking beer with their buds at the local pub, you were working your a$$ off either learning a trade or studying hard in college, racking up student loans that will take normally half your life time to pay off. Then you suck up what little courage you can muster and take the chance that you will succeed as you mortgage every possession including your very soul in order to raise enough money to open the doors to your own business. God help you if you actually succeed and your company grows! Damn you too if have the nerve to buy yourself a nice home and car while Joe Smoe your employee, who finally woke up and realized he had to work for a living after mommy kicked him out of the house at 32 can't buy the same house and the same car!!!! Waaahhhhhh!!!!! What do I do? He has more than me! I should just be able to sit on my a$$ and get a brand new Lamborghini every other day for NOTHING!!!!!! I know...lets get the government to make a new law forcing them to give me their hard earned money! Yes! Let's elect an American hating, socialist moron to take down those big bad corporations and share their wealth with me for doing nothing!!!!

Yes, it sounds great, huh? However, as a great woman once said..."The problem with socialism is that, sooner or later, you run out of other people's money." - Margaret Thatcher.

Actors, pro sports players, singers etc.... They, who do so little for so much....who don't even need to be much smarter than a tick-tac and seldom are, are the loudest of them all crying about the big bad corporations. Bah!

Sony and the rest of them should really shut their over stuffed pie-hole. (Billions, eh? Wow!) They really do give corporations a bad name. However, the way to really shut them up is to NOT SUPPORT THEM!!! Don't buy their product. Don't go see their movies. Make it clear to those around you (if they are interested) why you don't support such-n-such corporation. You need to stand up for what you know is right. Be heard! Don't try to punish the rest for a few bad apples. It is your children and your childrens' children that will suffer for it if we take your route.

"Life is a constant learning experience. The day you stop learning is the day your are either dead, or a liberal!" -Morbid Justice

Oh, and I won't even go into the deeper economics of paying everyone more money. It's just too silly to even go there. I'm home sick, trying to work remotely from home and just too tired to go back and edit my flu stricken dribble...sorry.

You missed one point in the anti-worker rant, to be born with the right name. Even Neil Bush, after being banned from finance after begin caught in his scam, was immediately given a director's job with a family friend's company.

The first bailout check went to who? Bears Sterns. You might've heard of them, they've had many managers arrested for illegal trading and manipulation (and another just last week), and yet when their gambles failed, who paid for it?

Obviously corporations don't really pay taxes, costs are generally just passed down, but if they're sitting on billions in liquid cash quarter to quarter, the imaginary "trickle down" is obviously not working.

hahahahahahaha SONY cares about the 'artists' and those in the 'movie industry'.... HEAR ME NOW.... SONY has only cared about it's bottom line since day 1. They took away the artistic cause in music, just pump it out often and all the time. Hollywood is running out of stuff to blow up anyhow.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The reason why Hollywood is doing worse then it was 10 years ago is because of the home theater market. How many people 10 years ago had a TV larger then 32''??? How many had 5.1 surround sound??? Not too many, only folks with a ridiculous amount of spending money could afford those things. Now, even the homeless have HD flat panel LCD or plasma TVs with 5.1 DTS surround sound systems.

Would you rather watch a movie in your comfortable house, on your nice couch, able to pause to pee, eat whatever you want at a reasonable price, pause to explain the plot twist to your wife...or would you rather go to a theater, find or pay for parking, lube up for the anal raping you'll get at the concession stand, sit in a dirty seat that some nerd sat in while he jerked off to the newest comic book movie (BTW, he hasn't showered in months), put up with the jackass behind you kicking the nasty seat, put up with the dude who's laugh is ridiculous, and not be able to go pee during the movie for fear of missing something. Given those options...I'd choose watching the movie at home, thank you!

Yeah, everything is ultimately the fault of Americans. No, it couldn't be that films being released are getting worse and causing dropping viewership/sales. It couldn't be that more people are having financial problems. Nope, it's gotta be those darned Americans and their cams in movie theaters that are destroying an industry with a push of a few buttons!

How much has Sony stolen, in terms of social and intellectual worth, from Americans with their mind-numbing entertainment?

So, basically what you are saying is: "The dog has a few fleas...KILL THE DOG!"

Yes, they pay taxes. The "rich" carry a major brunt of the tax burden. As for corporations not really paying taxes...Gee, I guess if you twist it like that, then there isn't a successful business on earth that actually pays taxes.

If you don't like the business/corporation, then stop buying their products. In most cases there are always alternatives companies out there selling the same product. Support them. As for those a$$holes getting away with murder...The only solution to that is to get rid of the whole lot of the current politicians. Every last one of them. Clearly not one of them are working for WE THE PEOPLE any more. They have it in their heads that we are their servants and they our masters. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. We have given them far...far too much power. The fleas are eating the dog to death! Rover needs to stop rolling over and playing dead!...before we actually are!

Aw, I'm really hurt by your name-calling. It's a shame that you're still unable to deal with the fact that downloading copyright material is clearly theft. I guess my criticism of sneak thieves was a little close to home for you.
