Speakers don't work, headphones no problem

Hi, I have an issue with an old laptop (HP ProBook 6555b) that still works fine although not the fastest.
All of a sudden, the speakers don't work anymore. I can't remember doing anything to cause this.

Symptoms:

• 
  
  I get good sound from the headphones when SPEAKERS is active in the Sound Mixer Window
  
  I get about one second perfect sound from the speakers when HEADPHONES is switched active in the Sound Mixer Window, even with headphones pinned in. After that, silence from the speakers and sound from the headphones
  

I don't mind them being interchanged, but I'd like to have some permanent sound from the speakers. I've already tried loading a new driver; was told that the driver is up-to-date.
The speakers keys on the laptop are green and work with the headphones (on/off, louder)

Is the speaker selected as default device when your headphone is not plugged in?
