Solved! Splice a av cable with HDMI cable

AV is analog audio and video. HDMI is digital audio video. A cable won't work.
Since most new TVs have one AV input you can buy an AV input selector to expand the number of inputs.
Another option is to connect the VCR to the AV input of the TV and connect the DVD to the AV input of the VCR. No good for picture quality but it will work. I would suggest you get a cheap blueray player to replace the DVD and connect theVCR. The picture quality will be better on th DVDs.
