SSD clone not booting windows 10

Hey guys,

So I've bought a new 128GB Samsung 750 EVO SSD to upgrade my current laptop with. I downloaded macrium, put my old HDD into a dock followed by the SSD and cloned it using macrium reflect (free). 2 hours later it said clone successful - so I put the SSD into my laptop and the BIOS appears but it doesn't boot straight to windows 10 as I thought it would seeing as though it cloned successfully.

Is there further steps I need to take in order for it to load windows 10 on my laptop? I thought as the clone was successful it would work straight away as per normal?

Any help much appreciated.

You took the HDD out of the laptop, and put it in a dock connected to a different PC? Along with the SSD?

1. it should NOT take 2 hours.
2. Can you return the laptop back to original booting condition with the HDD?

Yes, exactly. I put both in the dock (hdd being source) and the new SSD in the other port.
I then connected to an alternate computer and did it that way.. Ill try 2. now and let you know.

Hang on...I would recommend a different path

Return the laptop to actual working config. The HDD in it.
Connect the dock and the SSD to the laptop.
Clone like that.

And these steps, mostly:

Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Loaded the HDD back in and boots slower than it was, but fine..

40 GB on the HDD (only the OS really, as the laptop is 2 weeks old) and the SSD has 128gb.

Also, the SSD has the 40gb of data on it from the 'successful' initial clone. Should I delete that?

It will get blown away with the new attempt.

No, leave that one.

Followed your steps and it now works perfectly. Didn't even open the BIOS just booted straight to the windows 10 desktop. Thanks so much mate. One question though.. Why did it effect it cloning from another computer although the source was the same? For future reference..

Too many variables to tell.
Possibly you missed the original boot partition, possibly something from the host system got ported to the SSD (unlikely)...
