The main reason why fishing is important is that the fish needed to rebuild the Community Center. There are a ton of fish needed to repair the aquarium as there are an incredible amount of bundles like the river fishing bundle, the lake fishing bundle and the specialty fish bundle. That is why fishing is really important in the game.

Let us first discuss the rods. The first is the Bamboo Pole.
You can get that for free because Willy is kind enough to give that to you when you first get into your farm. You will receive a letter in the first few days and he will gift you the rod.
The second rod that you can get is the Fiberglass Rod.
It can be bought for 1800 gold from Willy and it gives you the ability to equip a fishing bait on it.
The fishing bait allows you to increase the speed at which fish bite your line. To use this rod you need to have at least 2 levels in the fishing skill. The last and the best rod that you can buy is the Iridium rod. This rod costs 7500 gold and it can use bait as well as tackle which really affects how well you can catch a fish. It can also affect how well you can get treasure and how slowly the fish breaks away from the line.
The crab pots, on the other hand, need bait to keep it running. You can get bait by crafting it. All you need is bug meat which you can get from killing bugs in the mines. Then all you need to do is to keep the loaded crab pots in the water which you can normally fish in. Every day you can check the pots to find sea creatures captured there.
There is even a skill that unlocks at level 10 of fishing that will allow you to catch fish from the crab pots without using any bait.

You should cast as far away from the shore as possible and you should go for deep blue waters as they have the most valuable fish. You should also fish as much as you can because catching the small fish will allow you to level up your skill and catch the big fish.
