stop alternative characters

How do I switch the keyboard off of showing alternative characters
I have a windows 8.1 laptop.
Now when I presss the question mark I get a É

Sorry - that didnèt work. I think I hit a key on the laptop keyboard by mistake. This pc has a life of itès own.
