Stopped differentiating between speakers and headphones

Until recently, whenever I plugged in speakers or headphones into my laptop (Toshiba Satellite A665 - Windows 7), the Realtek HD Audio Manager popped up with a prompt that asked me to select whether the device was speakers or headphones and changed the settings accordingly.

I do not think I did anything, but this message stopped showing up and now, whenever I plug anything in, it plays the sound from the device but also from the internal laptop speakers, with poorly balanced audio.

I tried messing with some control panel settings, and restarting, but nothing even shows up in the devices section so I'm not sure how to change this. Does anyone know what might be the problem?
