strange lines on a friends laptop screen, what could cause the issue

I'll post an image below to show you what it looks like.
I've narrowed it down to
Screen dead(or cable problem in either case the screen will need replacing)
GPU dead (gonna have to replace the entire mobo with the soldered GPU, or if they can solder a new GPU then that should fix it)
Driver problem (easily fixed at home isn't it )
Now I would have been sure it was the first one but the lines are nothing like what I have seen in the many dead screens that I have seen till now. But then again different manufacturers screens may behave differently.

I have asked my friend to boot into safe mode, but just for knowledge what is the most likely problem?

screen could be broken look for cracks or it could also be the gpu try plugging in an external monitor or hooking it up to a tv, if it does the same on the monitor or tv it may be the graphics
