(Stupid?) TiVo question

Hi everyone. I have a DirecTiVo receiver with the two tuners. My
understanding is that I can record two shows at the same time, and I have.
But here's my question. Today I turned on my tv and it went to one of the
tuners. It was a music channel. I hit the TiVo button and noticed that I
was recording 60 Minutes on CBS. I went back to live tv and the music
channel. I wanted to see what was on 60 minutes so I hit the Enter/Jump
button in the lower right of the remote to go to the other tuner. I got CNN
with no buffer showing. I hit the button again and it went back to the
music channel. I hit it again and it went back to CNN. I kept toggling back
and forth between the two channels. I returned to the TiVo menu and CBS was
still recording. And several hours later I went back to check and it had
recorded the whole show.

So, my question is this: I'm able to go back and forth between the music
channel and CNN. But I'm also recording CBS. That's THREE sources, not
TWO. What's going on?

You hit the down arrow to switch between tuners, not the Enter key.

Hitting the Enter button sends your current tuner to its previous
channel. That's why you never had any buffer after hitting Enter. It
was switching your current tuner to a different channel and removing
your buffer in the process.

No. It probably should, though.

But Google's all anyone needs, right? ;)

Seems to me that the Owner's Manual would cover most of the FAQs in
this group, with the FAQ at tivo.com covering most of the rest.

Ken,
It's not your fault. The Tivo software is old technology and really
not elegant enough to allow average users to use it properly.

You really should look into the more advanced cable DVR's
now available.

Hope this helps,

and just how are the cable companies DVR's technology more "advanced" versus
just different?

The cable DVR's are more advanced than their earlier cable DVRs, still
years behind TiVo in features, performance and reliability.

Kenny, any reason why you skipped over Dolby 5.1?

There are many TiVos that do 5.1.

Cable dillweed. Cable.

No Cable Tivos can do any of the things I listed above.
They're ancient technology.

I wasn't positive of that so I skipped it and then forgot to get back to it.

Right. Is that what that tin foil hat you wear is for?

Or are you filtering out the aliens with that?

If I didn't want to see your posts and a tin foil hat would do the job, I'd
gladly where one - and I'm sure others would too.
