Wow I never realized modems looked like that back in 1964. And I never realized it could take nearly a minute to load the front page of Wikipedia on a text browser!

What I don't understand though was how he was able to get the antique modem to understand the IP protocol, and stuff like that. :sweat:

The modem shouldn't have anything to do with IP addresses. It simply communicates the information sent by the PC and received by the server - it just takes a long time to do so. Think about it - a 56k could surf the web, so could a 28.8. Why not a dinosaur and a person with a lot of patience?

80 x 25 = 2000 bytes, maybe 4000 per 'BBS screen' if ANSI colours are used.

That's for a full console screen. It would take under 60 seconds each time.

Of course a 14.4k would do it in 1 second (2 max) for several reasons though.

With modern v42 & v42bis a MODEM can out perform
a 256 Kbps xDSL line.

It's shocking how inefficient IP & HTML / SGML / XML can be, it truely is.

For that matter, does xDSL even perform realtime HARDWARE compression ?
