Switch output from AVG to HDMI

I've been using the AVG output on my laptop to connect to my TV, and I finally had a chance to buy a HDMI cable so I want to switch to that so I can use the TV's speakers.

How do I tell my computer to switch the output from AVG to HDMI? The TV input is set to HDMI, and under screen resolution options I've told windows 7 to extend my display to the second monitor, but under the display option it only has "Display Device on: VGA".

Shut down your laptop.
Disconnect the VGA cable from the VGA port on the laptop and the HDTV
Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the laptop and the HDTV
Power up the laptop and HDTV.
Extend windows to the second display.

It should be that easy.
