Switching Windows 8 Versions

I have a Surface Pro that currently has a Windows 8.1 Pro and I recently acquired a product key for Windows 8.1 Student but whenever I enter it it says it's not usable for this version of Windows.

why do you want to run student version instead of pro version?

any ms office will work in win8.1 pro.
