Thin Laptops

Hi, I currently have a Dell X200 for office use and love it's thinness,
weight, and general size. I now need to get a new laptop for my
personal use, and am looking at very low priced small laptops.

I am currently looking at the Compaq Evo N400c, the Compaq Armada M300,
the HP Omnibook 500, the IBM X21, and the X200. What do you all think
of these models, and which would you get if you were on a tight budget?

Thanks!

As a diehard IBM Thinkpad fan, I'd recommend the X series. I have an
X22 and it's a great little laptop. It's got the Thinklight for the
keyboard, a CF slot just in case you decide to use a CF memory card or
CF wifi card. Frees up the PC Card slot for other things. Decent
battery life too. It's easy to change the hard drive out if needed and
of course, the Thinkpad keyboard.

I like Thinkpads but the X21 is an older discontinued model, and I
think it has a 512MB maximum memory limit or something like that. You
can certainly get them used on ebay for low prices. Refurb X40's with
an IBM warranty are now around $1000 and that's a newer and nicer
machine if you can afford it. I bought one and had slight hassles
with the dealer, but the machine itself is great.

Yea, I've had many IBM's (570, r31, r40) and loved them, but think
they're a little over priced on ebay so I just bought the evo n400c for
$365 inc. shipping. It has 256mb of ram, 700Mhz PIII, 40gb HD, and a
good battery.

I have here (temporarily) a Compaq N410C. Very nice little machine in
many ways - BUT - I don't like the keyboard and trackpad (well - I don't
like _any_ trackpad). The keyboard is "recessed" into the main
bezel/palmrest, and the F keys and Esc key are under-sized ... meaning
you can't "stab" at it in the way I like to ....

But sounds like its a bit late to tell you this :)

The thing about the n400c vs. the n410c is it doesnt use a trackpad,
but instead a trackpoint :) The keyboard shouldnt be a problem, becuase
i had a armada m300 a while back with the keyboard was the same way and
I didnt have any problems.
