Now I'm looking for the procedures to follow in replacing the HD in my
ThinkPad i-series. It has no floppy drive, but we do have the ME disk
that came with it. I have Backup My PC, but no image creator.
I have a big external HD to copy or backup the files to -
Source for or directions sought.

If the old laptop drive is still working, and.....
If you have a desktop computer available, I'd suggest getting a laptop
drive adapter and install the laptop drive in the desktop computer
(temporarily), then clone the small drive to a hard drive on the
desktop. Then replace the small laptop drive with the new larger
laptop drive as a temporary installation on the desktop. Then clone
the image back to the new laptop drive from the desktop's hard drive.
Install the new laptop drive in the laptop and you're finished.

For cloning I recommend xxcopy (it's freeware for personal use), and
the hardware drive adapter is available on ebay for about $10.

I used this procedure when I changed from a 1 GB to a 6 GB drive in my
Thinkpad, and it worked just fine.

What if I do this:
Remember that I have no floppy, and assume that the laptop can be
booted from a CD ---
Put the new HD in my external (USB) enclosure attached to the laptop--
Run Format and FDisk on the new drive from the laptop
XXClone the C Drive to the new HD
Move the new disk to the laptop
Boot the laptop using the bootable CD I made with NERO
FDisk to set the active partition
