Tivo and C-Band

If a C-band receiver's output is sent to a Tivo unit, will the picture
quality be degraded?

It appears to me that it may, because to do the "live replay" feature, it
needs to store the feed. Is it storing and replaying it at the same
quality?

For the live buffer, there is a marginal loss. Forrecording, you can
set the recording qualtiy lower, to be able to record more
programming.

Has anyone successfully interfaced Tivo to a 4DTV receiver?

The Tivo unit puts out a channel-changing signal for DirecTV receivers to
use to tune to the appropriate channel. It seems to me this feed could be
mapped to change the 4DTV to a satellite/channel, since most DirecTV
channels are also on the big dish.

If anyone knows how to do that or has suggestions, let me know. Of course
you can do manual Tivo recording of your 4DTV, but the real benefit is in
using their guide information. The main missing piece is some
hardware/software to map DirecTV channels to 4DTV channels.

There was a project called blackboxDVR that did exactly that.
It received the DirecTV channel command, mapped the DirecTV channel
number with the 4DTV 4DTV sat/VC, gave the IR command to move to that
satellite, waited for the dish to stop, then changed channel.

That is just what I'm looking for. I could not view the video files on this
site, they are ".mov" files. How do you view them?

Also, there were no instructions or contact information on this site. How
do you build or obtain it?

To view .MOV files,one needs to have Quicktime,which can be had by going to:

http/www.apple.com/quicktime and download it.

Regarding the DVR Blackbox, it appears this project was begun 2 years ago
and still is not finished. The last post about the expected release date
says it is just "weeks" rather than "months" from being done.

That thing is cool. I sure hope it is finished before C band is
entirely dead.
I think it is possible to make the TiVo control the 4DTV.
I don't know how to make the magic slices that would make it worth the
effort.

unhacked TiVo, mostly as the TiVo cannot drectly control a C-band
receiver.

Yeah, I think I can insert the remote codes into the tivo, like with
the Pansat. The problem would be sending the sat + channel.
I believe you would need to make a custom slice with some guide data
that had the additional keystrokes.
I'll bet the TiVo Canada guys could do it.

Didn't someone make some software and simple IR hardware on the serial
port to accomplish this already for a bunch of different irds?
I wish someone would post the link for that.

knowing how to control a C-ban receiver is the trouble. It does have a
compatible code BTW.
